Discovering the Beauty of Kujukushima
Today was a day of breathtaking scenery and delightful culinary experiences as we ventured into the heart of Nagasaki's natural beauty. From exploring the stunning islands of Saikai National Park Kujukushima, to indulging in local ramen and unwinding at a stylish bar, it was a day filled with unforgettable moments. Join me as I recount our adventures and share the highlights of our exploration.
Our day began with an early start, fueled by anticipation for the natural wonders that awaited us at Saikai National Park Kujukushima. Erika, Lena, and I grabbed a quick bite at the hotel before setting off. The journey to the park was smooth, and soon we were immersed in the serene landscape of rolling hills and sparkling waters.
The main attraction of the morning was, without a doubt, the boat tour of Kujukushima. As we boarded the Pearl Queen, a graceful white ship, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. The name Kujukushima translates to ninety-nine islands, but in reality, there are over 200 islands dotting the bay. The islands are part of Saikai National Park, known for its rugged coastline and diverse ecosystem. The cruise lasted about fifty minutes, weaving between the islands. The recorded commentary in Japanese and English provided interesting facts about the islands' formation and history.
As the boat glided through the crystal-clear waters, we were treated to panoramic views of the lush green islands rising majestically from the sea. The July sun cast a warm glow on the landscape, creating a picturesque scene that seemed straight out of a postcard. Lena was particularly fascinated by the unique rock formations and the vibrant marine life visible beneath the surface. I found myself reflecting on the resilience of nature and the importance of preserving these precious ecosystems for future generations.
After the boat tour, we made our way to the Tenkaiho Observatory, eager to capture more stunning views of Kujukushima. The observatory is located on a hilltop and offers a 180-degree panoramic view of the islands and the surrounding coastline. As we ascended to the top, the anticipation grew, and we were not disappointed. The vista was simply awe-inspiring. From our vantage point, we could see the islands stretching out into the horizon, their verdant slopes contrasting beautifully with the azure waters. Erika, with her keen eye for photography, captured some truly remarkable shots, while I simply stood in awe, soaking in the beauty of the landscape.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments of observation and reflection.
By lunchtime, our appetites were calling, and we decided to seek out a local ramen spot. Based on some online research, I chose Ramen Hiiragi, known for its unique tomato-based ramen. The restaurant was small and cozy, with a welcoming atmosphere. We were lucky to arrive before the lunch rush, as a line quickly formed outside shortly after we were seated. Ordering was a breeze thanks to the English language option on the ordering machine. I opted for the tomato ramen with extra eggplant, while Erika chose the tonkotsu ramen. Lena, ever adventurous, decided to try the tsukemen.

The tomato ramen was a revelation. The broth was rich and flavorful, with a hint of sweetness that perfectly complemented the savory notes. The grilled eggplant added a delightful smoky flavor and a satisfying texture. Erika's tonkotsu ramen was equally impressive, with a creamy and savory broth that was both comforting and satisfying. Lena enjoyed her tsukemen, dipping the firm noodles into the rich, concentrated broth. We all agreed that Ramen Hiiragi was a culinary gem, and I made a mental note to recommend it to any fellow travelers visiting Nagasaki.
After our satisfying lunch, we strolled through the streets of Nagasaki, soaking in the local atmosphere and admiring the blend of Japanese and Western architecture. I couldn't help but think about my hometown of Matsumoto and how it, too, has its own unique charm and character. Perhaps one day, I'll write about Matsumoto and share its hidden gems with the world.
As the afternoon progressed, we decided to take a break and unwind at the Seven Seas Lounge & Bar, located in the Hilton Hotel. The bar had a sophisticated ambiance, with plush seating, soft lighting, and a well-stocked bar. We ordered a round of drinks – a Japanese whiskey for me, a glass of local sake for Erika, and a refreshing cocktail for Lena. As we sipped our drinks, we reminisced about the day's adventures and made plans for the days ahead. The Seven Seas Lounge & Bar proved to be the perfect spot to relax and recharge before our next adventure.

For dinner, we wanted to try another local favorite, and Menya Always came highly recommended. This ramen restaurant is known for its modern interior and friendly service. I ordered the lemon ramen, intrigued by the unique flavor combination. Erika opted for the classic tonkotsu, while Lena went for the spicy miso ramen. My lemon ramen was a delightful surprise. The broth was rich and creamy, with a refreshing citrus zest that cut through the richness. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the toppings added a satisfying crunch. Erika enjoyed her tonkotsu, savoring the rich and savory broth. Lena, with her love for all things spicy, devoured her miso ramen with gusto. Menya Always lived up to its reputation, and we left feeling satisfied and content.

Before heading back to the hotel, we decided to check out a local bar, hoping to experience Nagasaki's nightlife. We stumbled upon a cozy establishment called Seven Seas Lounge & Bar. The bar had a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, with friendly bartenders and a diverse selection of drinks. I ordered a glass of local sake, eager to sample the flavors of Nagasaki. Erika opted for a Japanese whiskey, while Lena chose a refreshing cocktail. As we sipped our drinks, we chatted with the locals and learned more about Nagasaki's history and culture. It was a memorable end to a wonderful day, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the warmth and hospitality of the people of Nagasaki.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the beauty and diversity of Nagasaki. From the stunning landscapes of Kujukushima to the delicious flavors of local ramen and the warm hospitality of the people, it has been a day filled with unforgettable experiences. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with my family, and I look forward to continuing our exploration of Nagasaki in the days ahead.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Mt. Nabekanmuri Park for more panoramic views and explore the Nagasaki Traditional Performing Arts Center, promising another day of cultural immersion and scenic beauty. Until then, I bid you goodnight from Nagasaki, with memories of island hopping and culinary delights dancing in my head.
