Island Hopping in Nagasaki

Today was a day of maritime adventures and culinary discoveries here in Nagasaki. We ventured out to explore the famed Kujukushima Islands, and ended the day with a delightful vegan meal. It's amazing how each day here brings new experiences, deepening our appreciation for this unique city.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Yoshinoya. Erika and Lena opted for the classic beef bowl, while I decided to try their breakfast set. I must admit, starting the day with a taste of Japan's fast-food culture was an experience in itself. It was a quick and efficient way to fuel up before our journey to the coast.

Our main destination for the day was the Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort. The resort itself was bustling with families and tourists eager to explore the famed Ninety-Nine Islands. Despite the name, there are actually over 200 islands that make up this stunning archipelago. The weather in Nagasaki during July is quite warm, with average temperatures between 75°F and 82°F, so we made sure to bring our sunscreen and reusable water bottles.

We arrived at the pier just in time for our Ninety-Nine Island Cruise. As we boarded the Pearl Queen, a sleek, white multi-deck ferry, Lena was particularly excited. She had read about the islands being featured in the opening scenes of The Last Samurai, and was eager to see the landscape firsthand. I must admit, even I was captivated by the thought of seeing a landscape immortalized on film.

The cruise itself was a serene and breathtaking experience. The emerald islets rose majestically from the sapphire waters, creating a panoramic view that was truly unforgettable. The gentle sea breeze and the warm sun made it all the more enjoyable. Erika, ever the photographer, was snapping pictures at every turn, trying to capture the beauty of the islands. It was hard to believe that such a tranquil landscape could exist so close to a bustling city.

To witness the serene beauty of Kujukushima is to understand the delicate balance between nature and history that defines Nagasaki.

As the Pearl Queen glided through the waters, we learned about the unique ecosystem of the islands. The clean waters around the islands provide the perfect environment for cultivating shellfish, such as oysters and clams. We even saw some local fishermen casting their lines from the shores of the smaller islands.

Lena, with her keen interest in marine life, was particularly fascinated by the diverse flora and fauna. She peppered the tour guide with questions about the various species of birds and plants that inhabit the islands. It was heartwarming to see her enthusiasm and curiosity.

After the cruise, we decided to have lunch at Japanese YoHira. The restaurant was a delightful surprise. We were seated in a traditional tatami room overlooking a small, tranquil garden. The setting was perfect for a leisurely lunch. The food was exquisite, with each dish meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. Erika particularly enjoyed the sashimi, while Lena savored the tempura. I opted for a traditional Nagasaki set meal, which included a variety of local delicacies.

Following our satisfying lunch, we decided to do some shopping. Lena had been wanting to visit the Village Vanguard Mirai Nagasaki Cocowalk Shop, so we made our way there. The shop was a quirky and eclectic mix of books, fashion, and unique gifts. Lena spent a good hour browsing through the manga section, while Erika and I explored the local crafts and souvenirs. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted fan as a memento of our trip.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Veggie Cafe Bar Nobister for dinner. Being a vegetarian, Erika was particularly excited about this place. The cafe was small and cozy, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The owner was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the menu was filled with creative and delicious vegan options.

We ordered a variety of dishes to share, including the vegan curry, veggie soup, and a selection of sandwiches. Each dish was made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients and bursting with flavor. Even I, a devoted meat-eater, was thoroughly impressed by the quality and taste of the food. It was a testament to the creativity and skill of the chef.

Erika was in her element, chatting with the owner about the local vegan scene and sharing recipes. It was wonderful to see her so happy and engaged. Lena, too, enjoyed the meal, trying new and exotic flavors with an open mind. It was a perfect end to a day of exploration and discovery.

As we walked back to the Richmond Hotel Nagasaki Shianbashi, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's experiences. From the stunning beauty of the Kujukushima Islands to the delicious vegan cuisine at Nobister, Nagasaki had once again surprised and delighted us.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Saikai National Park Kujukushima and the Tenkaiho Observatory. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the islands from a different vantage point. And perhaps, we'll find another hidden culinary gem to explore. Until then, sayōnara!

Before I forget, I must mention the small umbrella I forgot to pack. It did rain a little today, and I found myself wishing I had remembered it. Also, it would have been useful to brush up on my Japanese phrases. While many people speak English, knowing a few basic phrases would definitely enhance the experience.

And now, as the day comes to an end, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. It's moments like these that make life truly special. Goodnight from Nagasaki. I look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you tomorrow. Until then, oyasumi nasai.
