A Day of Parks and Ramen in Nagasaki

Today was a day dedicated to exploring the natural beauty surrounding Nagasaki, a welcome change of pace after delving into the city's poignant history. Erika, Lena, and I set out with a plan to immerse ourselves in the serene landscapes of Saikai National Park and Tateyama Park, and of course, to sample more of Nagasaki's culinary delights.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ramen Hiiragi. I had read rave reviews about their unique tomato ramen, and I must admit, I was intrigued.

The restaurant was small and cozy, just as the reviews described. Ordering was done via a machine, which offered English language options, making it easy for us. I opted for the tomato ramen with extra eggplant, while Erika chose the tonkotsu ramen, and Lena, ever adventurous, went for the tsukemen.

My first taste of the tomato ramen was a revelation. It was nothing like I expected – not at all like watery spaghetti as some might presume. The broth was rich and flavorful, with a depth that was both comforting and exciting. The grilled eggplant added a smoky sweetness that complemented the tomato base perfectly. I could understand why it came so highly recommended. Erika thoroughly enjoyed her tonkotsu ramen, praising the creamy and savory broth, while Lena was captivated by her tsukemen.

Sometimes, the most unexpected combinations create the most unforgettable experiences.

Fueled by our delicious breakfast, we headed to Saikai National Park. The park spans a significant area of Nagasaki Prefecture, offering diverse landscapes from the Kujuku Islands to volcanic formations. We chose a trail that promised panoramic views of the islands, a decision driven by Erika's love for coastal scenery. The July sun was warm, but a gentle breeze kept us comfortable as we hiked. The views were indeed breathtaking. The emerald islands dotted the azure sea, creating a vista that felt both expansive and intimate. It was easy to see why this park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. We spent a few hours exploring the trails, taking photos, and simply soaking in the tranquility of nature.

Lena, always keen on capturing the moment, took numerous photographs, experimenting with different angles and filters. Erika, ever the botanist at heart, identified various plant species along the way, sharing interesting facts about their origins and uses. I, on the other hand, found myself reflecting on the resilience of nature, its ability to heal and regenerate, much like the spirit of Nagasaki itself.

For lunch, we decided to try Japanese YoHira, a restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. Finding it was a bit of an adventure, tucked away in a quiet alley, but the effort was well worth it. The restaurant exuded a sense of history and tradition, with its charming interior and serene atmosphere. We opted for a multi-course meal, eager to sample a variety of local dishes. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. From the fresh sashimi to the delicate tempura, every dish was a testament to the chef's skill and dedication.

Erika was particularly impressed with the seasonal vegetables, noting their freshness and vibrant colors. Lena, always eager to try new things, savored every bite, asking questions about the ingredients and preparation methods. I appreciated the simplicity and elegance of the meal, a reminder of the beauty that can be found in everyday moments.

In the afternoon, we visited Tateyama Park, another of Nagasaki's scenic gems. Located on a hillside overlooking the city, the park offered stunning views of the urban landscape and the harbor beyond. Although it's known as a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in the spring, even in July, the park had its own charm. We strolled along the terraced hills, enjoying the cool shade of the trees and the gentle breeze.

Lena found a quiet spot to sketch in her notebook, capturing the essence of the park's serene beauty. Erika explored the various pathways, discovering hidden nooks and crannies filled with lush greenery. I simply sat on a bench, watching the boats sail in and out of the harbor, lost in contemplation. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on our experiences in Nagasaki so far. I read that Tateyama Park is also known for night views of the city, which sounds magical. Perhaps if we have the opportunity, we'll return to see it illuminated at night.

Before dinner, we took a detour to YOPE NAGASAKI, a shop I had read about that offers vegan-friendly and cruelty-free products. While not something I would usually seek out, Erika and Lena were keen to explore it, and I am always open to new experiences. The shop was small but well-curated, with a focus on natural cosmetics and home care items. Erika was particularly interested in the Polish brand's commitment to using over 90% natural ingredients. She ended up purchasing a few items, impressed by the quality and ethical sourcing of the products.

For dinner, we decided to try Menya Always, a ramen restaurant known for its tonkotsu and lemon ramen. I had read about the restaurant's unique lemon-infused broth, and I was curious to see how it compared to the tomato ramen I had enjoyed earlier in the day. The restaurant had a modern and spacious interior, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I ordered the lemon ramen, while Erika opted for the classic tonkotsu, and Lena, feeling adventurous, chose the spicy miso ramen.

The lemon ramen was a delightful surprise. The broth was rich and creamy, with a bright citrusy note that cut through the richness perfectly. It was refreshing and flavorful, a unique twist on a classic dish. Erika enjoyed her tonkotsu ramen, praising the depth of flavor and the tender pork. Lena, however, found her spicy miso ramen a bit too intense, but she appreciated the bold flavors and the generous portion size.

As we walked back to our hotel, the Richmond Hotel Nagasaki Shianbashi, we reflected on our day of exploration and culinary adventures. We had discovered the natural beauty of Nagasaki, sampled its diverse cuisine, and even stumbled upon a hidden gem of a shop. It was a day filled with unexpected delights and memorable moments, a testament to the magic of travel.

Tomorrow marks the final day of our Nagasaki adventure. We plan to visit Sofuku-ji Temple and the Nagasaki City Museum of History and Folklore. I also hope we can find time for a nightcap at Agio Bar&Cafe アージョ before we leave this captivating city. I am looking forward to another day of discovery and reflection, as we prepare to bid farewell to Nagasaki and carry its memories with us on our journey home.
