Echoes of Nagasaki's Past and Present

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to wander through the quieter corners of Nagasaki and reflect on the city's layered history. Erika and Lena joined me, and we set out to discover places where the past and present intertwine, creating a unique tapestry of experiences. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling – the opportunity to connect with a place on a deeper level, beyond the well-trodden tourist paths.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Joyfull Nagasaki Tsukimachi. It's always interesting to see how the familiar comfort of a family restaurant translates across cultures. This morning, I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Erika enjoyed a more Western-style meal. Lena, ever the adventurous one, tried something completely new – a local Nagasaki specialty she spotted on the menu. It's these small moments of culinary exploration that add so much flavor to our trips.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Dutch Slope, or Oranda-zaka as it's known in Japanese. This cobblestone street, ascending a hillside, offered a glimpse into Nagasaki's history as a gateway to the West. As I walked along the slope, I couldn't help but imagine the foreign merchants who once resided here, their lives and stories now woven into the fabric of the city. The preserved Western-style houses transported me back in time, offering a tangible connection to Nagasaki's era of international exchange.

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences are found in the quiet moments of reflection, in the gentle rhythm of exploring a new place.

The air was filled with a sense of tranquility as we strolled along the Dutch Slope. The old houses, with their Western architectural styles, stood as silent witnesses to a bygone era. I paused to admire the intricate details of the buildings, imagining the lives of the families who once lived within their walls. Erika, ever the historian, shared fascinating anecdotes about the Dutch traders and their influence on Japanese culture. Lena, with her keen eye for aesthetics, captured the beauty of the scene through her camera lens.

As we ascended the slope, we came across Higashi Yamate 13, a former residence that is now open to the public. Stepping inside, I felt as though I had been transported back in time. The house was meticulously preserved, with its original furniture and room layouts intact. I wandered through the rooms, imagining the lives of the wealthy European family who once called this place home. From the balcony upstairs, we enjoyed panoramic views of the surrounding area, taking in the beauty of Nagasaki's cityscape.

After immersing ourselves in the history of the Dutch Slope, we sought a change of pace at Nagasaki Seaside Park. The park offered a welcome respite from the urban bustle, with its lush green lawns and scenic waterfront views. I found a quiet bench overlooking the bay and simply sat, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The gentle sea breeze and the sound of the waves lapping against the shore created a sense of serenity that washed over me.

Lena, always eager to explore, ventured off to discover the park's hidden corners. She returned with tales of vibrant flower beds, intriguing statues, and playful fountains. Erika, meanwhile, found a shady spot under a tree and settled in with her book, content to lose herself in the world of literature. I watched as families strolled along the walking paths, children laughed and played, and couples shared quiet moments together. It was a scene of everyday life unfolding against the backdrop of Nagasaki's stunning natural beauty.

For lunch, we ventured to Horaiken, a restaurant known for its Champon. This Nagasaki specialty, a hearty noodle soup with seafood and vegetables, was the perfect way to refuel after our morning explorations. The restaurant was bustling with locals, a sure sign of its authenticity. As I savored the rich flavors of the Champon, I felt a sense of connection to the city and its culinary traditions.

In the afternoon, we returned to the Richmond Hotel Nagasaki Shianbashi for a brief respite. After a short rest, we made our way to Yossou for dinner. This restaurant, renowned for its Chawanmushi, offered a taste of Nagasaki's culinary heritage. The steamed egg custard, delicate and flavorful, was a true delight. I savored each spoonful, appreciating the skill and artistry that went into creating this traditional dish. The restaurant's ambiance, with its historic setting and attentive service, added to the overall experience.

As we dined, I reflected on the day's journey. From the historical echoes of the Dutch Slope to the serene beauty of Nagasaki Seaside Park and the culinary delights of Horaiken and Yossou, today had been a celebration of Nagasaki's unique character. It was a day of gentle exploration, of connecting with the city on a deeper level, and of creating lasting memories with my family.

Our evening concluded with a visit to the IRISH PUB TEMPLEBAR, a quirky spot that offered a taste of home away from home. While I am usually one to seek out local experiences, Erika and Lena were in the mood for something familiar. We shared a few drinks, chatted with the friendly bartenders, and enjoyed the lively atmosphere. It was a pleasant way to wind down after a day of exploration.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had today. Nagasaki has a way of captivating the soul, of drawing you in with its rich history, its stunning natural beauty, and its warm, welcoming people. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Saikai National Park and Tateyama Park, eager to discover more of Nagasaki's hidden treasures. I'm particularly looking forward to immersing myself in the natural beauty of Saikai National Park, and perhaps finding some inspiration for my antique shop back in Heidelberg. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of today, the echoes of Nagasaki's past and present resonating in my heart.

The warmth of the Nagasaki summer is a stark contrast to the usual Heidelberg weather, but I find myself enjoying it. Perhaps it's the change of pace, or maybe it's the feeling of being immersed in a culture so different from my own. Whatever the reason, I'm grateful for this opportunity to explore Nagasaki with my family, and I look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you.

I also made a point of trying to use some of the Japanese phrases I'd been practicing. My attempt at ordering sake at Yossou was met with a warm smile and a nod of approval from the waitress, which was a small victory in my book. Erika, with her usual grace, managed to navigate conversations with ease, her German accent adding a touch of international flair to our interactions. Lena, meanwhile, preferred to observe and absorb, her keen eyes capturing the essence of each moment.

As the day drew to a close, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. Nagasaki had surprised me with its blend of history, nature, and culinary delights. It was a city that had left an indelible mark on my soul, a place I knew I would never forget. And as I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of the adventures that awaited us in the days to come.

The trip has been a wonderful experience so far, and I am so grateful to be sharing it with my family. It is important to cherish these moments, as time passes by so quickly. I am already looking forward to our next adventure tomorrow!

The trip reminded me of a quote by a famous Japanese author, Soseki Natsume: Moving is easy, what remains is the question. It truly makes one think, doesn't it?
