Sunday in Tarragona: A Journey Through Time

Today, Erika and I immersed ourselves in the historical heart of Tarragona, a city that whispers tales of Roman grandeur and Catalan spirit. With the Spanish sun warming our faces, we set out to explore the landmarks that define this ancient city. It’s remarkable how each stone and corner here seems to hold a story, waiting to be discovered.

Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at La Caleta Restaurant Tarragona. Situated in a charming modernist villa, the restaurant exuded a romantic ambiance, enhanced by its lovely garden setting. We savored traditional Mediterranean fare, including tasty tuna tataki, cheese pies, and octopus. The food was delicious, and the presentation was impeccable. Erika particularly enjoyed the fruitcake, while I found the cheesecakes to be a delightful treat. The restaurant’s versatile wine list ensured that we found the perfect accompaniment to our meal. The prompt service and cozy atmosphere made it a perfect start to our day of exploration.

Bellies full and spirits high, we started our exploration at the Mediterranean Balcony. The panoramic views from this vantage point were breathtaking. The azure waters of the Mediterranean stretched out before us, meeting the horizon in a seamless blend of blue. It was easy to see why this spot is so beloved by locals and tourists alike. I was fascinated to learn that the Balcony stands atop the ancient Roman walls that once fortified the city. As we leaned against the iconic railing, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the countless people who had stood in this very spot over the centuries. Erika, ever the romantic, touched the iron railing, a local tradition said to bring good luck.

Next on our itinerary was Casa Canals, a noble house museum that offered a glimpse into the life of a prominent 19th-century Tarragona family. As we walked through the rooms, I was struck by how well-preserved the furniture and decor were. It felt as though the Canals family had just stepped out for a moment, leaving their home and lives on display for us to admire. Erika was particularly taken with the garden and terrace, which offered magnificent views of the sea. I found myself marveling at the fact that the house was built on top of the Roman city walls, a testament to the layers of history that define Tarragona.

Our historical journey continued at the Torre del Pretori, also known as the Castell del Rei. This ancient tower, once part of the Roman forum, now serves as a local history museum. As we explored the exhibits, we learned about the daily life, governance, and social practices of the Roman inhabitants of Tarraco. I was particularly impressed by the tower's architecture, which has stood the test of time for over two millennia. Ascending the tower, we were rewarded with panoramic views of Tarragona's skyline and the Mediterranean Sea. It was a perfect spot for taking photos and soaking in the atmosphere of this vibrant city.

For lunch, we chose Restaurant Palau del Baró, a restaurant specializing in Mediterranean and Delta del Ebro cuisine. The setting was enchanting, occupying a restored medieval mansion. We dined in one of the rooms decorated with vintage furniture, enjoying the ambiance of the historic building. The menu featured a variety of seafood and rice dishes, with a focus on cuisine from the Ebro River Delta. Erika opted for the paella, while I chose the seafood stew. Both dishes were flavorful and satisfying, providing a taste of the local culinary traditions.

As the afternoon waned, we sought a place to unwind and reflect on our day. We found ourselves at Pub Highland, an Irish pub known for its cheerful staff and affordable prices. Though not particularly fond of Irish pubs, Erika and I decided to give it a try. We ordered a couple of beers and relaxed in the pub's enjoyable ambiance. The decor was interesting, and the music created a lively atmosphere. It was a pleasant way to end our day of sightseeing, providing a moment of respite before dinner.

Dinner was at AQ Restaurant, a place recommended for its strong, direct flavors and blend of Catalan, Spanish, and Asian cuisines. The restaurant had a cute and inviting ambiance, perfect for a relaxed evening. We opted for the Petit tasting menu, which included dishes like ceviche, callos, fish, and meat, all incredibly fresh. Erika particularly enjoyed the grilled tuna, while I was impressed by the lemon sorbet with yogurt and maracuya cream. The friendly owners made the experience even more enjoyable, exchanging recipes and tips with us. It was a memorable culinary experience that perfectly capped off our day.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the way Tarragona seamlessly blends its rich history with modern-day life. The Roman ruins stand as proud reminders of the city's past, while the vibrant culture and culinary scene offer a taste of its present. As we strolled back to Hotel SB Ciutat Tarragona, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this fascinating city with my beloved Erika. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Museu del Port de Tarragona, Torre dels Vents, and Plaça de les Cols, eager to uncover more of Tarragona's hidden gems. Before we turn in for the night, Erika reminds me that I still need to look up a good place to shop for souvenirs. She has her eyes set on a few antique Roman coins.
