First Impressions: Yakushima Unveiled

After a long journey, arriving in Yakushima felt like stepping into another world. The air is thick with the scent of cedar and the promise of adventure. Today was all about grounding myself in the island's history and culture, a gentle introduction before I delve into the wilderness. I'm eager to understand the soul of this place, starting with its roots.

My day began, as many do when traveling, at the airport. The Yakushima Airport Restaurant was my first stop for breakfast. I decided to try their local specialty which was delicious and filling, fueling me up for the day ahead. It's amazing how a simple meal can connect you to a new place, especially when it's crafted with local ingredients.

With a full stomach, I set off to explore the Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center. The center provided a comprehensive overview of the island's unique ecosystem and its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The exhibits detailed the diverse flora and fauna, with visual representations showing how plant heights change with altitude. I was particularly fascinated by the displays on the island's wildlife, including the Yakushima macaques and Yaku deer. It's clear that conservation is a priority here, and the center does an excellent job of educating visitors about the importance of preserving this natural treasure.

To truly appreciate a place, one must understand its past and present, its struggles and its triumphs.

Next on my list was the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. This museum offered a deep dive into the island's cultural heritage, showcasing artifacts from the Jomon period to the present day. I was captivated by the exhibits of wooden tools, handicrafts, and festival items. The museum also featured a replica of a traditional house from nearby Kuchinoerabu Island, giving me a glimpse into the lives of the islanders in the past. Though the exhibits were primarily in Japanese, the English pamphlets provided were very helpful. It was fascinating to learn about the traditions and customs that have shaped Yakushima's identity over centuries.

After immersing myself in history, it was time for lunch. I headed to Yakushima Gallery Restaurant, hoping to taste more of the local cuisine. The restaurant indeed offered a variety of local dishes, and I opted for a set meal served in a Yakusugi wooden bowl, which was a delightful touch. The flavors were unique and satisfying, a testament to the island's culinary traditions.

In the afternoon, I decided to explore the Yakushima Market. It was a vibrant hub of activity, with locals selling fresh produce, seafood, and handmade crafts. I picked up a few souvenirs, including some Yakushima green tea and a small Yakusugi carving. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I was happy to find unique mementos to remind me of my time here. I also managed to find a small phrasebook, remembering that I had forgotten to pack one – a lesson learned for future travels!

As evening approached, I made my way to Il Mare for dinner. This Italian restaurant, located near the airport, came highly recommended, and I was eager to try it. The reviews were right; Il Mare offers authentic Italian cuisine with a local twist. I savored a delicious pizza made with Yakushima venison, a truly unique culinary experience. The cozy ambiance and friendly staff made it a perfect ending to a day of exploration.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a moment to reflect on the day. Yakushima has already captivated me with its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty. I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this enchanting island and share my experiences with you all. Tomorrow, I plan to venture into the heart of the island and hike the Shiratani Unsui Gorge, known for its mystical forest and ancient cedar trees. It’s said to be the inspiration for the movie *Princess Mononoke*, and I am eager to see it for myself. I'm also hoping to find Wilson's Stump, a remnant of a giant cedar tree with a fascinating story.

I am also planning to stop by Cafe&Bar RainTree in the evening for a nightcap.

As I prepare for tomorrow's adventure, I am filled with anticipation and excitement. Yakushima has already exceeded my expectations, and I know that the best is yet to come. I am particularly excited about seeing the Shiratani Unsui Gorge, as my daughter Olena is a big fan of *Princess Mononoke*, and I plan to take lots of pictures for her. I am also grateful for the opportunity to disconnect from the stresses of my job as a geriatric nurse and reconnect with nature. It is a privilege to be able to experience the beauty and tranquility of this island, and I am committed to making the most of every moment. Good night from Yakushima!

P.S. I must remember to buy an extra memory card for my camera tomorrow!
