Whispers of the Valley, Tastes of the Island

As my Yakushima adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the profound connection I've forged with this enchanting island. Today was a day of gentle exploration and savoring the last moments of tranquility before my journey back to Leipzig begins. It's funny how a place so far removed from my everyday life can feel so deeply familiar, like a comforting embrace from nature itself.

My final full day in Yakushima began with an early start. I had breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. Though simple, the meal of local delicacies was satisfying, a perfect way to fuel up for the day's explorations. The restaurant had a charming, old-school vibe, reminiscent of traditional soba shops, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. It's these small, authentic experiences that truly enrich a journey. I overheard snippets of conversations from fellow travelers, each with their own tales of adventure on the island, and felt a sense of camaraderie with these kindred spirits. After breakfast, I set off to explore Yokogawa Valley.

The valley was a symphony of greens and blues, with sunlight filtering through the dense canopy, creating an ethereal glow on the moss-covered rocks and crystal-clear streams. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and ancient cedar, a fragrance that has become synonymous with Yakushima in my mind. I spent hours wandering along the valley paths, losing myself in the tranquility of the surroundings. The sound of the water cascading over the rocks was like a soothing melody, washing away any lingering stress or worries.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, in the quiet whispers of nature that speak directly to the soul.

Yokogawa Valley, located in the northwestern part of the island, is a favorite destination for both locals and foreigners. It’s one of the largest valleys on the island, boasting long paths, lush trees, and granite boulders covered in green moss. The clear stream running through the valley adds a refreshing splendor to the landscape. As I walked, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer age and resilience of the forest. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the power and beauty of the natural world. I even tried my hand at forest bathing, a practice I'd read about that involves immersing oneself in the forest atmosphere. Closing my eyes, I focused on my breath and the sounds around me – the rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, the gentle flow of water. It was incredibly grounding, a way to connect with nature on a deeper level.

After my time in Yokogawa Valley, I decided to indulge in a different kind of sensory experience at the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato”.

This charming attraction showcases a variety of plants from around the world, offering visitors a chance to explore lush, jungle-like surroundings and learn about different fruit species. I was guided through the garden by a local, who shared information about the various tropical fruits and plants. Although there was a slight language barrier, his enthusiasm and passion for the garden were infectious.

The garden was a riot of colors and scents, with exotic fruits hanging heavy on the branches and vibrant flowers blooming in every corner. I saw bananas, mangoes, papayas, guavas, and other tropical fruits growing. It was fascinating to see these plants in their natural environment, a far cry from the sterile supermarket shelves back home. The tour concluded with a delightful fruit platter, allowing me to sample the garden's fresh produce. The flavors were intense and exotic, a true taste of the tropics. I savored each bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such unique and delicious treats. The Yakushima Fruit Garden, also known as “Papaya no Sato,” is a charming spot to visit if you have some time to spare. The garden features a variety of plants from around the world, and visitors are taken on a tour by a friendly elderly gentleman through the lush jungle-like surroundings.

For lunch, I stopped by the Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan.

It was a bustling hub of local produce and crafts, a perfect place to soak up the island atmosphere. I picked up a few souvenirs for Hans and Olena, some locally made jams and a small piece of Yakusugi wood carving. I also grabbed a quick and satisfying lunch of Onigiri and Miso soup, enjoying it at one of the picnic tables outside the market. It was a simple meal, but the flavors were fresh and authentic, a true taste of Yakushima. Pon-tan kan is located along the prefectural road between Hara and Mugio Village. The shop focuses on local agricultural produce and its processed goods. Many of Yakushima's products such as “Ponkan” and “Tankan” (citrus fruits), juice, ice cream, and sweets made by the local residents can be purchased.

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to a farewell dinner at Shiosai.

This Japanese restaurant specializes in tempura, a traditional dish that features seafood and vegetables lightly battered and fried to perfection. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, ensuring that every bite is a delightful experience. Shiosai is a culinary haven located in the picturesque surroundings of Yakushima. I opted for the set menu, which included a variety of tempura dishes, sashimi, and miso soup. The food was exquisite, each dish a delicate balance of flavors and textures. I particularly enjoyed the tempura prawns, which were perfectly crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside. The attentive staff were knowledgeable about the offerings and eager to recommend pairings with local sake, enhancing the overall dining experience.

To cap off my final night, I ventured to Fisherman's Bar NINA.

As I pack my bags tonight, I can't help but feel a tinge of sadness at the thought of leaving Yakushima. This island has touched my heart in a way that few places have. It's a place of incredible natural beauty, rich culture, and warm, welcoming people. I know that I will carry the memories of this journey with me always, a reminder of the importance of connecting with nature and embracing the simple joys of life. Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Kagoshima to catch my flight to Tokyo and then onwards to Leipzig. It's a long journey, but I know that the memories of Yakushima will keep me company along the way. Until next time, Yakushima, thank you for the adventure.
