Whispers of the Island: Banyan Trees and Sea Turtles

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to delve deeper into the natural tapestry of Yakushima. After days of challenging hikes, I decided to dedicate today to some of the island's more accessible, yet equally captivating, treasures. It was a day to slow down, observe, and appreciate the smaller wonders that make this island so special.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at DINING CAFE BAR SLOW. The name itself promised a relaxed start, and it certainly delivered. I savored a simple yet satisfying meal while enjoying the forest view from the back of the restaurant. It's amazing to find European dishes on this remote island. I opted for a light salad and a strong coffee, fueling up for the day's adventures. It reminded me of the quiet mornings Hans and I share in our garden back in Leipzig, though the sounds of Yakushima's wildlife were a unique and welcome change.

First on the agenda was Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park. As I approached, I was immediately struck by the sheer density of banyan trees. These aren't just trees; they're living sculptures, their roots twisting and turning in a dance that has lasted for centuries. The park itself isn't large, and the walk through the banyans only takes about 10 minutes. But the experience is profound. The air is thick with moisture, and the light filters through the dense canopy, creating an ethereal atmosphere.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

The entrance fee was a modest 240 yen. As I wandered along the paths, I found myself marveling at the intricate root systems, some of which seemed to defy gravity. It felt like stepping into an enchanted forest from a fairy tale. I could almost imagine the trees whispering secrets to each other in the rustling leaves. I found myself imagining what Olena would think of this place. She always loved a good fairy tale. I spent a good half hour simply wandering around, snapping photos, and soaking in the atmosphere. The park is located near the ocean, and I could see some locals fishing nearby. It's a peaceful spot, a place where one can truly escape the hustle and bustle of modern life. I read that the park is located in the small village of Shitoko, between Miyanoura and Isso.

After the banyan park, it was time for lunch. I headed to At Pesca, a restaurant known for its delicious and quick tempura meals. I opted for the vegetable tempura bowl, which was both filling and flavorful. The restaurant has a charming, island beach vibe, with Hawaiian music playing in the background. It was a delightful culinary oasis. I enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and the friendly staff. This little gem is known for its fresh bentos and snacks. Several reviewers rave about the tempura box and the momo chicken drizzled with teriyaki sauce. I can attest to the deliciousness of the tempura. I overheard a couple of other tourists discussing the takoyaki, so it must be good too. The place also offers takeout containers, which is great for taking food on the trails.

In the afternoon, I visited the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall. As someone who has always been fascinated by marine life, I was eager to learn more about these gentle creatures. The hall is small but informative, offering a wealth of information about sea turtles and the conservation efforts to protect them. The admission fee was 500 yen. The manager was incredibly knowledgeable, providing clear and engaging explanations about the turtles' life cycle, their habitats, and the threats they face. I was particularly moved by the exhibits showcasing the dedication of the staff towards protecting these beautiful animals.

I learned that Yakushima is one of the most important nesting sites for loggerhead sea turtles. Every summer, from late April to early July, these creatures come to the island's shores to lay their eggs. I wish I were here during that time to witness this magical experience firsthand. The museum had interactive displays and hands-on objects, which made the experience even more engaging. I even got to see some adorable baby turtles that had hatched on the local beach. It was heartwarming to see these tiny creatures, knowing that they were being given a chance to thrive in a world that is often hostile to their kind. I read that the museum showcases the life of loggerhead and green turtles.

Before dinner, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at YAWARACA “The Scent of Yakushima LAB”. This shop is a treasure trove of locally made fragrances and skincare products, all inspired by the natural beauty of Yakushima. As I've gotten older, I've found myself more drawn to natural scents and remedies, perhaps as a way to reconnect with the earth. I picked up a small bottle of cedarwood essential oil, hoping to capture the essence of the island's ancient forests. It reminded me of the small shop near our home in Khmelnytskyi, where my mother used to buy herbs and essential oils. I could almost smell the familiar scents of lavender and chamomile.

For dinner, I chose SamPotei, a restaurant known for its local cuisine. I wanted to try some of the island's specialties, and this place came highly recommended. The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. I ordered a set menu that included fresh sashimi, grilled fish, and a variety of local vegetables. The flavors were exquisite, a testament to the freshness of the ingredients. I enjoyed the smoked flying fish and spaghetti. As I savored each bite, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the ancient banyan trees to the adorable sea turtles, Yakushima had once again revealed its magic. I thought this would be a great place to bring Hans, I know he would enjoy the atmosphere and the food.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Daio Sugi and the Canoppi treetop canopy walk [sic]. Daio Sugi is another giant cedar, estimated to be over 3,000 years old, and the treetop walk sounds like an exhilarating way to experience the forest from a different perspective. I'm also planning to have dinner at Iso no Kaori, a restaurant known for its seafood. Perhaps I'll try some more local delicacies.

As the day drew to a close, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience Yakushima's natural wonders. It's a place that nourishes the soul, reminding us of the importance of preserving our planet's precious resources. As I prepare for another day of exploration, I carry with me the whispers of the island, the gentle rustling of the banyan trees, and the hopeful gaze of the baby sea turtles. These are the memories that will stay with me long after I leave this enchanting place.
