Nature's Embrace: Waterfalls and Gardens
Today was all about immersing myself in the raw beauty and serene landscapes that Yakushima so generously offers. It was a day of contrasts, from the thunderous roar of a waterfall to the quiet contemplation amidst meticulously curated botanical gardens. These experiences reminded me of the simple joys in life, the kind that resonate deeply and stay with you long after you've left.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter. The name itself promised a unique start, and it delivered. The traditional Japanese breakfast set was beautifully presented and tasted even better. Fuelled up and ready for the day, I set off to my first destination: Ohko Waterfall.
The drive to Ohko Waterfall was scenic, with lush greenery enveloping the winding roads. I couldn't help but reflect on how different this landscape is from my home in Leipzig. While I cherish the orderly beauty of German gardens and parks, there's something untamed and profoundly moving about Yakushima's wild, verdant expanses. It reminds me of the Ukrainian forests of my childhood, albeit with a distinctly Japanese twist.
As I approached the waterfall, the sound of rushing water grew louder, creating a sense of anticipation. The parking area was conveniently located just a short walk from the viewing platform. Even from a distance, Ohko Waterfall was magnificent. Dropping 88 meters, it is one of Japan's best 100 waterfalls. The sheer force of the water plunging into the basin below was mesmerizing. The air was thick with mist, and I could feel the cool spray on my face.

I spent a good while simply watching the water cascade down, feeling the power of nature. It was easy to understand why this spot is so popular. The viewing point, accessible via a short path, offered a fantastic perspective. I took several photos, trying to capture the waterfall's grandeur, but pictures hardly do it justice. It's something you have to experience in person.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After the invigorating experience at Ohko Waterfall, I decided to visit the Botanic Gardens. I was ready for a change of pace, eager to immerse myself in a more curated natural environment. Before heading to the gardens, I stopped for lunch at Subarashi Indian Restaurant. It might seem odd to eat Indian food in Japan, but the reviews were compelling, and I was curious. The restaurant lived up to its name; the curry was indeed 'subarashi' (wonderful), offering a delightful change from Japanese cuisine. It was a comforting, familiar taste that reminded me of the warmth of home, even thousands of miles away.

The Yakushima Botanic Garden, near Miyanoura, turned out to be a hidden gem. It’s part of the Yakushima Nature Park and offers a chance to see the island’s flora without the strenuous hikes. The gardens were peaceful, with well-maintained paths winding through various sections. I was impressed by the diversity of plant life, from tropical fruits to native Yakushima species. The sweet scents of various flowers hung in the air.
I explored the herb garden, the tropical fruit orchard, and even a butterfly conservatory. It was fascinating to see bananas, mangoes, and papayas growing. The Yakushima Botanical Research Park has nearly 2,000 varieties of wild and cultivated tropical plants and fruits. I also learned that the park offers Yakushima coffee, known for its mild flavor and aroma.
The gardens also featured examples of traditional Japanese plant art, such as *nerai*, *kokedama*, and *kusamono*, which I found particularly interesting. These art forms use mosses and other plants to create miniature landscapes, reflecting a deep appreciation for nature's beauty. It reminded me of the intricate embroidery my mother used to create, each stitch telling a story, each pattern a reflection of Ukrainian heritage.
One of the highlights was the observation deck, which provided a commanding view of the coastal Toroki Falls and Mt. Mocchomu. It was a perfect spot to reflect on the day's adventures. I savored the panoramic vista, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience Yakushima's natural wonders. I even bought a small jar of Japanese plum jam at the garden's shop as a souvenir.
As evening approached, I made my way to Yakushima Airport Restaurant for dinner. It was conveniently located and offered a variety of Japanese dishes. I opted for a local specialty, flying fish, which was delicious. The restaurant was bustling with travelers, and I enjoyed the lively atmosphere.
To cap off the day, I decided to visit Hitomekuri, a local bar known for its relaxed vibe. It was a great place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The bar is known for serving set meals as well as homemade pasta, pizza, Indian curry, Thai curry and handmade sweets. I enjoyed a glass of local Yakushima shochu, savoring the unique flavors of the island. The owner was friendly, and I struck up a conversation with a few locals, learning more about Yakushima's culture and history.

I'm particularly excited about seeing the banyan trees, which are said to be quite remarkable. I'm also looking forward to learning more about the sea turtles that nest on Yakushima's beaches.
Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a moment to appreciate the clear night sky. The stars seemed brighter here than in Leipzig, a testament to Yakushima's pristine environment. I felt a deep sense of peace and gratitude, thankful for the opportunity to experience this magical island.
