A Day of Discovery in Honmura
Today was all about diving deeper into the artistic heart of Naoshima, specifically the charming village of Honmura. I wanted to experience the blend of art, history, and local life that this island is so celebrated for. With my camera in hand and a sense of adventure, I set out to explore the Seaside Gallery, the Honmura Lounge & Archive, and the serene Gokurakuji Temple. It was a day filled with visual delights, quiet contemplation, and delicious tastes.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Little Plum. The cafe's red tent was easy to spot near the Miyanoura Port. I opted for their homemade dry curry, a flavorful start to the day. I also rented a bike from there to explore the island. Fuelled up and ready to go, I cycled towards the Benesse House area, eager to see what the Seaside Gallery had in store.
The Seaside Gallery, designed by Tadao Ando, is nestled into the landscape, offering stunning ocean views. The gallery itself is a long, narrow space, allowing natural light to flood the interior. The current exhibition, featuring Walter De Maria's work, was a captivating experience. The way the art interacted with the natural light and the surrounding scenery was truly special. It was a fantastic start to the day, blending art and nature seamlessly. I spent a good hour there, just soaking it all in.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next on the agenda was the Honmura Lounge & Archive. Cycling through the quaint streets of Honmura was a treat in itself. The village has a unique charm, with its traditional wooden houses and narrow lanes. The Honmura Lounge & Archive serves as an information center for the Art House Project. It's a great place to learn about the various art installations scattered throughout the village. I picked up a map and some brochures, eager to explore the Art House Project in more detail. The lounge also has a lovely shop with local crafts and souvenirs, perfect for picking up a memento of my visit. I learned that the Art House Project started in 1998, and it focuses on transforming empty houses in Honmura into works of art. It's amazing how art is integrated into the daily life of the residents.

After gathering information at the Honmura Lounge, I decided to visit Gokurakuji Temple. This serene Buddhist temple, dating back to the Heian period, provided a moment of quiet reflection amidst the art-filled landscape. The temple's main hall and gate, recognized as cultural treasures, showcased the beautiful architecture of the Edo period. I took some time to wander through the temple grounds, admiring the peaceful atmosphere and the intricate details of the buildings. It was a welcome contrast to the modern art installations, offering a glimpse into the island's rich history.

For lunch, I decided to try Issen, the Japanese restaurant located in Benesse House Museum. The restaurant offers a modern take on traditional Kaiseki cuisine, featuring seafood from the Inland Sea. I opted for a seasonal set meal, which included a variety of small dishes, each beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The views of the sea and the contemporary art pieces added to the dining experience. It was a truly memorable meal, combining culinary delights with artistic inspiration.

In the late afternoon, I returned to Honmura for a closer look at the village itself. I wandered through the streets, admiring the traditional architecture and the unique atmosphere. I stumbled upon a small cafe called Kon'nichiwa, known for its cozy ambiance and delicious offerings. I couldn't resist stopping for a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. The cafe's terrace offered a perfect spot to relax and soak in the surroundings. The bright yellow van parked outside was hard to miss!

As evening approached, I decided to have dinner at Nagomi, a restaurant located within the Naoshima welfare center. This unique setting creates an inviting atmosphere where locals and tourists can enjoy hearty Japanese meals together. I opted for one of their set meals, which featured fresh, local ingredients prepared in traditional styles. The communal canteen-like environment encouraged social interactions, making it easy to connect with locals over shared tables. It was a truly authentic and heartwarming experience.

With the day winding down, I decided to check out Kon'nichiwa bar for a nightcap. The bar is known for its tranquil ambiance and is a beloved spot for art lovers and tourists alike. I enjoyed a glass of local sake, reflecting on the day's adventures. The bar's cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a perfect place to unwind and soak in the island's unique vibe.
Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Naoshima has to offer beyond its famous museums and art installations. The village of Honmura, with its blend of art, history, and local life, is a true gem. The Seaside Gallery, the Honmura Lounge & Archive, and the Gokurakuji Temple each offered a unique perspective on the island's cultural landscape. And the delicious meals at Little Plum, Issen, and Nagomi provided a taste of the local flavors. Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Shipyard Works By Shinro Otake, Miyanoura Gallery 6, and the Naoshima Fishing Park, eager to discover more of this island's hidden treasures. I might also do some shopping at Mikazukishoten.
As I walked back to My Lodge Naoshima, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this extraordinary island.
