Honmura's Hidden Art: A Day of Discovery

Today was all about diving deeper into the artistic heart of Naoshima, specifically the Honmura district. Away from the larger, more famous museums, I was eager to explore the smaller, more intimate art experiences the island had to offer. It turned out to be a day of quiet contemplation, unexpected beauty, and a deeper connection to the island's unique blend of art and life.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at maimai. I decided to try their famous fish burger, and I was not disappointed. The yellowtail was incredibly fresh, and the burger had a delightful, light flavour. It was the perfect way to start a day dedicated to exploring the art scene.

First up was the Ando Museum. From the outside, it looked like a traditional, unassuming Japanese house, blending seamlessly into the neighborhood. But stepping inside was like entering another world. The interior was a striking contrast, a series of concrete spaces designed by Tadao Ando himself. It was fascinating to see how he integrated his signature minimalist style into the existing structure of the old house. The museum documented Ando's work on Naoshima and elsewhere, giving me a greater appreciation for his architectural vision and his impact on the island. I felt like I was getting a peek into the mind of a master, understanding his process and his passion for creating spaces that interact with nature and light.

Art doesn't transform. It just plain forms.

Next on my list was the Art House Project, specifically the Go'o Shrine. This involved a bit of a walk uphill, but the view from the top was worth it. The Go'o Shrine is part of a project where artists transform empty houses scattered around residential areas into works of art, weaving in the history and memories of the buildings. Designed by Hiroshi Sugimoto, the shrine itself was a contemporary take on traditional Shinto architecture. What struck me most was the blend of old and new, the way Sugimoto incorporated glass stairs leading down into an underground chamber beneath the shrine. It felt like a journey into the earth, connecting the present with the past. The shrine offered panoramic views of the sea and the surrounding islands. It was a tranquil spot, a place for quiet reflection on the relationship between art, nature, and spirituality.

After the Go'o Shrine, I made my way to Miyanoura Gallery 6. Housed in a renovated pachinko parlor, the gallery was an interesting example of adaptive reuse. The architect, Taira Nishizawa, retained the facade of the former pachinko parlor, a familiar landmark for the island's residents, while completely redesigning the interior into an exhibition space. This gallery focuses on photography and video installations, offering a different perspective from the other art sites on the island. The current exhibition, the Setouchi Archive Project, features a collection of materials related to the landscape, culture, folklore, and history of the Seto Inland Sea area. It was fascinating to see how the artist, Motoyuki Shitamichi, collaborated with local residents and experts to present new perspectives on the island. The gallery also had a park next to it. The sunlight and natural light that poured through the ceiling louvers change the interior with shades of monochrome to provide a space for the works that change in accordance with the season and the time of day. A rest terrace has also been created on the lawn of an adjacent children's park, and the visitors' exit from the gallery is located beside the park so that visitors can share space with the children of Naoshima, enabling the gallery to be a combination of an indoor and outdoor facility together with the front courtyard.

For lunch, I decided to try Raumen Tsumu. It was a small, unassuming place, but the ramen was fantastic. I went for a classic shoyu ramen, and the broth was rich and flavorful, the noodles perfectly cooked. It was a comforting, satisfying meal that warmed me up after a day of exploring the island.

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Chikurin. This charming izakaya (Japanese tavern) is known for its authentic dishes and warm hospitality. I indulged in a variety of small plates, including fresh seafood, grilled vegetables, and local sake. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and I enjoyed chatting with the locals and fellow travelers.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I decided to check out BAR Queen's-Q Naoshima. Located in the Miyanoura area, this bar is known for its serene ambiance and exquisite drinks. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of art and exploration. The bartender was skilled and friendly, and I enjoyed a classic cocktail while soaking in the relaxed atmosphere. I even had the chance to chat with a few locals, learning more about the island's history and culture.

Tonight, I'm feeling incredibly grateful for the opportunity to experience Naoshima's art scene in such an immersive way. It's not just about seeing the art; it's about feeling it, connecting with it, and understanding the story behind it. It's about discovering the hidden gems, the unexpected moments of beauty, and the unique blend of art and life that makes Naoshima so special.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Teshima Island, another island in the Seto Inland Sea known for its art museums and natural beauty. I'm particularly excited to see the Teshima Art Museum, which I've heard is an incredible experience. I'm also looking forward to exploring the island's walking trails and enjoying the local cuisine. I'm sure it will be another day of discovery and inspiration.

As I reflect on my day, I'm reminded of why I love traveling solo. It allows me to fully immerse myself in the experience, to connect with the local culture on a deeper level, and to discover hidden gems that I might otherwise miss. It's about being open to the unexpected, embracing the unknown, and allowing myself to be transformed by the journey.

I am so excited about the Setouchi Triennale 2025 which is starting on April 18, and will include the Naoshima New Museum of Art, which is scheduled to open on May 31. I will definitely need to come back to see it.

Naoshima continues to surprise and inspire me, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
