Discover Naoshima's tranquil side beyond the museums, exploring hidden parks, serene baths, and local flavors on this art island.
Island Escapades: Beyond the Art Houses
Today was a day of venturing off the beaten path here on Naoshima, seeking out the island's more subtle charms. While the museums and famous installations are spectacular, I was eager to discover the quiet corners where art and nature intertwine in unexpected ways. It was a day of gentle exploration, and I found myself appreciating the slower pace of life here, a welcome change from the bustling art scene.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Tee's DELI GROCERY. I opted for the falafel sandwich, a delightful fusion of Middle Eastern flavors with a Japanese twist. The owner was playing some cool jazz tunes, which created a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Fuelled up for the day, I headed towards my first destination: the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima.
Discover the Cultural Melting Bath in Naoshima, where art and nature converge for a tranquil and inspiring experience.
The Cultural Melting Bath is an outdoor work at the Benesse House Museum, constructed back in 1998 with the concept of bringing people from different races and cultures together. The bath is built on Naoshima's coast, which has strong energy according to the principles of Feng-Shui. Unfortunately, it wasn't a day where the bath was open for public use, but I was still able to appreciate the artistic and cultural significance of the work. The blend of Taifu rocks from China and an American-made Jacuzzi, arranged according to Feng Shui principles, was fascinating. It made me think about the intersection of Eastern and Western cultures and the potential for harmony between them. It's definitely something I'll keep in mind for future travels – seeking out those places where different traditions meet and create something new.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
From the Cultural Melting Bath, I decided to explore Kasaneiwa.
Explore the stunning natural beauty and historical significance of Kasaneiwa, a captivating landmark in Tonosho, Kagawa, Japan.
The journey was a bit of a trek, involving a climb up a long stairway and a narrow mountain road. According to local lore, pirates used to roam the Seto Inland Sea many years ago. The views of the Seto Inland Sea from the top were absolutely worth the effort. The stacked rocks, seemingly balanced against all odds, created a serene and almost spiritual atmosphere. I spent some time there, simply soaking in the beauty of the surroundings and contemplating the mysteries of nature.
For lunch, I stopped at NaoPAM/ Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda.
Experience authentic Japanese cuisine at NaoPAM in Naoshima - where tradition meets flavor in a cozy atmosphere.
This charming eatery specializes in fish set meals that highlight the freshest catches of the day. I went for the grilled fish set, and it was absolutely delicious. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the accompanying rice, miso soup, and pickles were a delightful complement. The cozy atmosphere of the restaurant and the friendly staff made the experience even more enjoyable.
My final stop for the day was Yokobou Park.
Experience peace and beauty in Naoshima's Yokobou Park, a tranquil retreat amidst nature's artistry, perfect for relaxation and reflection.
After the climb to Kasaneiwa, I was ready for a more relaxed experience, and Yokobou Park delivered perfectly. The park offers a serene retreat with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. I wandered through the park's winding paths, admiring the cherry trees and enjoying the peace and quiet. It was the perfect place to reflect on the day's adventures and recharge before heading out for dinner.
As evening approached, I made my way to EAT LOCAL 直島食堂 for dinner.

I chose the Kagawa Prefecture Shirasu Don, and it was incredible. The restaurant is located in Tsutsujiso, a seaside park that offers accommodation. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Naoshima's hidden gems. The fresh seafood and local ingredients were a testament to the island's commitment to sustainability and local sourcing.
To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Little Plum, a café-bar near Miyanoura Port.

The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying drinks and conversation. I opted for a Naoshima beer and chatted with some fellow travelers about their experiences on the island. It was a great way to unwind and connect with others who share a passion for art and travel.
Tomorrow is my last day on Naoshima, and I plan to make the most of it. The itinerary includes visits to George Rickey Three Squares Vertical Diagonal , La forêt des murmures and Drink a Cup of Tea. I'm also hoping to do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Naoshima Shop Umihotaru before catching my ferry back to the mainland. It's been an incredible journey, and I'm already looking forward to returning to this magical island someday.
Naoshima has a way of seeping into your soul, leaving you with a sense of peace and inspiration. It's not just about the art; it's about the way art is integrated into the landscape, the way the island's residents embrace creativity and sustainability, and the way the island encourages you to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life. As I prepare to leave, I feel grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this unique corner of the world. I would love to bring back some of my own honey and brew mead, perhaps adding some Japanese herbs to give it a local twist.
And with that, another day concludes on this art-filled island. Good night from Naoshima!
