Exploring the Serenity and Culture of Shikoku Island
Day 6: A Day of Artistic Wonders and Historical Echoes in Kochi
Explore Kochi's art and history: from Otsuka Museum's masterpieces to Kochi Castle's ancient walls, a day of cultural immersion.
Kochi's Cultural Tapestry
Today was a day of diving deep into the cultural heart of Kochi, a city that beautifully blends artistic expression with historical significance. From the meticulously recreated masterpieces at the Otsuka Museum of Art to the imposing presence of Kochi Castle, it was a day filled with awe and reflection. I'm excited to share my experiences, from the delicious local cuisine to the vibrant nightlife.
My day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Eki-mae Shokudo. It’s a cozy little spot, and I was eager to try some authentic local fare. I opted for a set meal with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. The simplicity and freshness of the ingredients were remarkable. It was a hearty and satisfying start to a day of exploration.
Next on the agenda was the Otsuka Museum of Art. Getting there was an adventure in itself, involving a local bus ride that wound through the scenic countryside. The museum is located in Naruto, Tokushima, a short trip from Kochi. As we drove, the landscape transformed into a patchwork of rice paddies and rolling hills, offering a glimpse into rural life here on Shikoku Island.
Arriving at the Otsuka Museum of Art, I was immediately struck by its sheer scale. Touted as one of the largest museums in Japan, it houses over 1,000 full-size ceramic reproductions of Western masterpieces. From ancient murals to 20th-century icons, the collection spans a vast range of artistic periods and styles. The museum was established to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Otsuka Pharmaceutical Group. The reproductions are created using a special technology on ceramic boards, which the museum claims will preserve their colors and shapes for as long as 2,000 years. The museum hopes to contribute to the recording and preservation of the world's valuable cultural heritage with its unique methods.

The first exhibit I encountered was the Sistine Chapel, recreated in its entirety. Stepping into the space, I was immediately transported to Vatican City. The vibrant colors and intricate details of Michelangelo's frescoes were astounding. It was a truly immersive experience, allowing me to appreciate the artwork in a way that would be impossible in the actual chapel, given the crowds and restrictions.
Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.I wandered through halls filled with works by Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, and Leonardo da Vinci. It was fascinating to see these iconic paintings reproduced on such a grand scale. The museum also featured recreations of altars, tombs, and entire halls, offering a comprehensive overview of Western art history.
One of the highlights was the recreation of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper," showcasing both the pre-restoration and post-restoration versions. It provided a unique opportunity to compare the two and appreciate the subtle nuances that were revealed through the cleaning process. I spent hours wandering through the museum's labyrinthine corridors, each turn revealing another masterpiece. Despite the fact that these were reproductions, the quality and attention to detail were remarkable. It was an enriching experience that deepened my appreciation for the history of Western art.
After immersing myself in the world of art, it was time to explore Kochi's historical side. I made my way to Kochi Castle, a symbol of the city and one of the few original castles remaining in Japan. The walk to the castle was pleasant, passing through the city center and along the banks of the Kagami River. The rainy season is definitely making its presence known, with humidity high and the occasional downpour threatening, but it hasn't dampened my spirits.

Kochi Castle stands proudly atop Otakasa Hill, offering panoramic views of the city. Built in the early 17th century by Yamauchi Kazutoyo, the first lord of the Tosa domain, the castle has survived fires, wars, and natural disasters. The current structure was reconstructed in 1753, preserving the original design and features.
As I approached the castle, I was struck by its imposing presence. The stone walls and wooden keep exuded a sense of strength and resilience. I climbed the steep steps leading to the main gate, imagining what it must have been like to defend this fortress against invaders.
Inside the castle, I explored the various rooms and chambers, admiring the traditional architecture and displays of historical artifacts. The castle museum showcased the history of the Tosa domain and the Yamauchi family, providing insights into the region's feudal past. From the top of the keep, I gazed out over the city, taking in the sprawling urban landscape and the distant mountains. It was a breathtaking view that offered a sense of perspective and connection to the past.
"The castle is illuminated from sunset until 10:00pm, making for an especially beautiful sight."
After soaking in the history and views, I descended from the castle and strolled through the surrounding park. The park was a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city, with lush greenery and tranquil ponds. I took a moment to relax on a bench, listening to the sounds of nature and reflecting on the day's experiences.
For lunch, I decided to try Restaurant&Cafe Riina. I had a delightful meal with a Riina burger and watermelon rosemary drink. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the staff were friendly. It was a perfect spot to recharge before continuing my exploration.

As evening approached, I sought out a place to unwind and experience Kochi's nightlife. I stumbled upon Irish Pub Amontillado, an unexpected find in this Japanese city. I decided to step inside and see what it had to offer. The pub had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, with a mix of locals and tourists mingling at the bar. I ordered a pint of local craft beer and struck up a conversation with the bartender, who shared some insights about Kochi's culture and history. The pub also offered a selection of Irish and Japanese dishes, creating a unique fusion of flavors.

The streets were bustling with activity, as locals and tourists alike enjoyed the warm summer evening. The lights of the city twinkled against the night sky, creating a magical ambiance.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Shikoku's natural beauty, with a visit to the Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore and the Kurushima Strait Observatory. I'm looking forward to discovering more hidden gems and capturing the essence of this enchanting island. I will be sure to stop by Inonakanokawazu for breakfast, Tataki Kobo for lunch and Tosa Rokkon for dinner. I am also hoping to have time to shop at Island Mishima.
