Exploring the Serenity and Culture of Shikoku Island
Day 5: A Day of Gardens and Arcades: Discovering Takamatsu's Charms
Explore Takamatsu's cultural heart: serene gardens, historic villages, and vibrant shopping streets. A perfect blend of nature and urban life.
Tranquility and Bustle in Takamatsu
Today was a delightful blend of serene landscapes and vibrant city life. Shikoku Island continues to surprise me with its ability to seamlessly weave together tradition and modernity. From exploring historical villages to strolling through meticulously designed gardens and experiencing the energy of local shopping streets, it was a day that truly captured the essence of Takamatsu.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hattorikun. It was a cozy spot, filled with locals starting their day, and I enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast set. The grilled fish was cooked to perfection, and the miso soup had a comforting warmth that prepared me for the day's adventures. I always appreciate these small, authentic experiences that offer a glimpse into the daily lives of the people here.
Next on the agenda was Shikoku Village, an open-air museum showcasing historical buildings from around Shikoku. The village is nestled at the base of Yashima, offering a beautiful hillside setting. Wandering through the relocated farmhouses, storehouses, and workshops dating back to the Edo and Meiji periods felt like stepping back in time.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.
One of the highlights was the vine suspension bridge, reminiscent of those in the Iya Valley, though perhaps a bit less precarious! The village also houses a modern art gallery, a striking contrast to the traditional buildings, providing a unique blend of old and new. I spent a couple of hours exploring every nook and cranny, captivated by the craftsmanship and history embedded in each structure.
After immersing myself in the historical charm of Shikoku Village, I headed to Ritsurin Garden, a sprawling landscape garden that’s considered one of Japan's finest. As a lover of green spaces, especially in urban environments, I was eager to see it, and it certainly didn't disappoint. The garden's origins date back to the early 17th century, and it's a masterpiece of meticulous design.

The ponds, sculpted hills, and meticulously pruned pine trees created a series of stunning vistas at every turn. I wandered along the paths, admiring the interplay of light and shadow, the reflections in the water, and the sheer artistry of the landscaping. The garden is set against the backdrop of Mount Shiun, which adds to its scenic beauty. I can only imagine how spectacular the autumn illumination event must be when the leaves change colors.
One of the most enchanting spots was the teahouse, where I paused to enjoy a cup of matcha while overlooking the serene landscape. It was a moment of perfect tranquility, a chance to soak in the beauty and reflect on my journey so far. I made a mental note to try and replicate some of the garden's design principles in my own small urban garden back in Hamburg – perhaps a miniature Japanese maple would do the trick. I took some photos, trying to capture the beauty and serenity of the garden.
For lunch, I stopped at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop, a family restaurant offering a variety of affordable dishes. It was a casual and welcoming place, perfect for a quick and satisfying meal. I opted for a set lunch with tonkatsu, rice, and miso soup – a classic combination that always hits the spot. It was a great way to refuel before the afternoon's adventures.

With my stomach full and energy levels restored, I ventured into Takamatsu Central Shopping Street. This bustling arcade is a shopper's paradise, with a mix of traditional shops, modern boutiques, and department stores. The covered arcade stretches for several blocks, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere. It’s part of the larger 2.7 km long Takamatsu Central Shopping Street, boasting a history of over 400 years.

I spent a pleasant couple of hours browsing the shops, soaking in the local atmosphere, and people-watching. I picked up a few souvenirs for friends and family back home, including some locally made crafts and snacks. The dome area at the northern end of the street, reminiscent of Milan's Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, was particularly impressive.
As evening approached, I made my way to Tosa Rokkon for dinner. This restaurant is known for its authentic Japanese cuisine and warm, welcoming ambiance. I decided to try some local specialties, including fresh seafood and grilled vegetables. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to head to the Otsuka Museum of Art and Kochi Castle. I've heard great things about the museum's collection of replicated masterpieces and the castle's historical significance, so I'm looking forward to another day of cultural immersion. I might even check out the Irish Pub Amontillado in the evening, for a bit of a change of pace.
Reflecting on today, I'm struck by the diversity and charm of Takamatsu. It's a city that effortlessly blends tradition and modernity, offering a rich tapestry of experiences for the curious traveler. As I continue my journey through Shikoku Island, I'm excited to see what other hidden gems await me.
The sun has now set, casting a golden glow over the island. I'm back in my cozy guesthouse, sipping on some local tea and jotting down my thoughts from the day. The sounds of the city have quieted down, replaced by the gentle hum of crickets and the distant murmur of conversations. It's a peaceful and soothing end to a day filled with exploration and discovery. I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience this beautiful island and share my adventures with you all.
I'm also starting to think about my urban beekeeping back in Hamburg, and how I can incorporate some of the sustainable practices I've seen here into my own work. Perhaps I can start a rooftop garden with native Japanese plants to attract more pollinators.
As I prepare for another day of exploration, I'm reminded of the importance of taking the time to appreciate the simple things in life – a beautiful garden, a delicious meal, a friendly conversation. These are the moments that make travel so rewarding, and I'm grateful for every opportunity to experience them.
I'm also making a mental note to buy a travel adapter, since I forgot mine. It would make charging my camera a lot easier! Tomorrow I will continue my journey, camera in hand and a heart full of anticipation. Good night from Shikoku Island!
I am also reminded that I need to buy a reusable water bottle, and a Japanese phrasebook. I am going to try and find one tomorrow!
