A Whirlwind Start to Shikoku Adventure

The first day of my solo journey through Shikoku Island was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment I set foot on this enchanting island, I knew I was in for an unforgettable experience. Today was all about chasing the famed Naruto Whirlpools and diving headfirst into the local culture and cuisine. It was a day filled with awe-inspiring sights and delightful tastes, setting the perfect tone for the adventures to come.

My day began bright and early with breakfast at Hattorikun. I was eager to sample some authentic Japanese morning fare. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and I settled in for a traditional Japanese breakfast. The meal was a delightful mix of grilled fish, miso soup, rice, and various pickled vegetables. It was a hearty and wholesome start to the day, providing the perfect energy for exploring the natural wonders that awaited me.

Fueled up and ready to go, I made my way to the Naruto Whirlpools. I'd seen photos and videos, but nothing could have prepared me for the real thing. As I arrived, I could already feel the anticipation building. The sky was clear, and the sun was shining, promising excellent visibility. July is supposed to be one of the best times to witness these powerful natural phenomena, and I was hoping to catch them at their peak.

My first stop was the Tokushima Prefectural Uzu-no-Michi Walkway. This incredible structure extends out over the Naruto Strait, offering a bird's-eye view of the swirling waters below. Walking along the glass-floored section of the walkway was both thrilling and a little nerve-wracking. Looking down, I could see the whirlpools forming and dissipating with incredible force. The sheer power of nature was on full display, and I found myself completely mesmerized. The wind was strong, adding to the dramatic atmosphere, and I was glad I'd packed a light jacket.

The raw power and beauty of nature, especially when witnessed firsthand, is a humbling and exhilarating experience.

The Uzu-no-Michi Walkway provided an unparalleled vantage point. I spent a good hour there, simply watching the dynamic display of water and light. The informative displays along the walkway also offered insights into the science behind the whirlpools, making the experience both educational and awe-inspiring. Apparently, the whirlpools are caused by the tidal currents between the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The difference in water levels creates these massive vortexes, some of which can reach up to 20 meters in diameter. It was truly a sight to behold!

After the exhilarating experience at the Uzu-no-Michi Walkway, I decided to take a break for lunch. I headed to Restaurant Obokekyo Mannaka, known for its local cuisine and scenic views. The restaurant offered a unique ordering system using machine tickets, where customers select their menu items by remembering the corresponding numbers. While some reviewers found the food to be average, I appreciated the local dishes served at reasonable prices. I decided to try a regional specialty, a noodle dish with locally sourced vegetables. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, and the view of the gorge from the restaurant added to the overall dining experience.

With my appetite satisfied, I decided to do some shopping at Shikoku Shop 88. I wanted to find some unique souvenirs to bring back home to Hamburg. The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts, snacks, and other goods. I picked up some Kagawa udon, artisanal sweets, and a beautiful piece of local pottery. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, offering recommendations and sharing stories about the local artisans. It was a great way to support the local economy and find some special mementos of my trip.

As evening approached, it was time for my final culinary adventure of the day: dinner at Tataki Kobo. This restaurant is known for its *tataki*, a traditional Japanese dish of seared meat or fish. I opted for the *katsuo tataki* (seared bonito), a local specialty. The fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful, with a delicate smoky taste. The *tataki* was served with a variety of condiments, including ginger, garlic, and ponzu sauce, allowing me to customize each bite to my liking. It was a truly memorable meal and a perfect way to end my first day on Shikoku Island.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a leisurely stroll along the coast, savoring the cool evening breeze and the sound of the waves. The sky was ablaze with color as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting a breathtaking scene that I knew I would never forget. As I walked, I reflected on the incredible experiences of the day. From the awe-inspiring Naruto Whirlpools to the delicious local cuisine, every moment had been a feast for the senses.

I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which will take me to the Iya Valley and the famed Vine Bridge. I've heard so much about the stunning landscapes and unique cultural experiences that await me there, and I can't wait to explore them firsthand. The plan is to have breakfast at Osusowake Shokudo Mado, lunch at Yoronotaki Gomenten, and dinner at Munagin. I'm also hoping to check out Bar Kohno for a nightcap, if I'm not too tired from all the day's activities.

As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore the beauty and culture of Shikoku Island. It's a journey that has already exceeded my expectations, and I know that the days to come will be filled with even more unforgettable moments. I am glad that I decided to travel solo, as it gives me the freedom to fully immerse myself in the experiences and connect with the local culture on a deeper level. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up a few new beekeeping tips along the way!

Good night from Shikoku!
