A Step Back in Time in Iya Valley

Day two of my Shikoku adventure transported me to a realm where time seemed to slow down, and nature reigned supreme. The Iya Valley, a place I had only read about in travel guides, revealed itself to be even more captivating than I could have imagined. It was a day of thrilling heights, tranquil beauty, and a deep dive into the heart of Shikoku's history and culture.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Osusowake Shokudo Mado. The cafe embodies the spirit of sharing, sourcing surplus vegetables from local farmers to create affordable, delicious meals. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying set lunch featuring local vegetables and grilled chicken. It was a perfect start to a day dedicated to exploring the natural wonders of the Iya Valley.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards the Iya Valley. The drive itself was an experience, with winding roads that snaked through the mountains, offering tantalizing glimpses of the valley's breathtaking scenery. It was easy to understand why the defeated Taira clan sought refuge here centuries ago; the valley's remoteness and rugged terrain provided a natural sanctuary, far removed from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

My first major stop was the famed Vine Bridge, or Iya Kazurabashi. As I approached, the bridge appeared almost like a mirage, a delicate structure suspended high above the emerald green waters of the Iya River. The bridge is made of woven vines, a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the local people. The current vines are replaced every three years to ensure the bridge's safety. Crossing the bridge was an exhilarating experience. With each step, the bridge swayed gently, offering glimpses of the river below through the gaps in the wooden planks. It was a thrilling reminder of the power of nature and the fragility of human endeavors.

After conquering the Vine Bridge, I felt a sense of accomplishment and a desire to explore more of the Iya Valley's hidden gems. I continued my drive, stopping at various viewpoints to soak in the panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains and forests. The valley was shrouded in a mystical mist, adding to its allure and creating an atmosphere of tranquility and serenity.

For lunch, I stopped at Yoronotaki Gomenten. After a satisfying meal, I continued my exploration of the Iya Valley, eager to discover more of its hidden treasures. The winding roads led me deeper into the mountains, revealing breathtaking vistas at every turn. The Iya Valley had exceeded all my expectations, offering a glimpse into a world where nature and culture coexist in perfect harmony. It was a place that had challenged me, inspired me, and left me with a deep appreciation for the beauty and resilience of the human spirit.

Before heading back for the night, I decided to check out Bar Kohno in Tokushima. It's known for its welcoming atmosphere and a wide selection of drinks, including local fruit cocktails. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

As I reflect on the day, I'm reminded of why I love solo travel. It's about embracing the unknown, challenging myself, and connecting with the world around me on a deeper level. The Iya Valley has been a testament to the power of travel to transform and inspire, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have experienced its magic.

The journey through Iya Valley was more than just a sightseeing trip; it was an immersive experience that touched my soul. The valley's natural beauty, rich history, and the warmth of its people left an indelible mark on my heart. As an urban beekeeper, I am constantly reminded of the importance of preserving our natural environment and celebrating the unique cultural heritage of different communities. The Iya Valley is a shining example of how these two elements can come together to create a truly special place.

I am also reminded of the importance of sustainable living and supporting local communities, values that are deeply ingrained in my personal and professional life. By choosing to stay in local guesthouses and dine in local restaurants, I was able to contribute to the economic well-being of the Iya Valley and learn more about its unique way of life.

The Iya Valley is a destination that I would highly recommend to any traveler seeking an authentic and immersive experience in Japan. It is a place where you can disconnect from the modern world, reconnect with nature, and discover the true meaning of serenity and cultural immersion.

The memories of the Iya Valley will stay with me long after I leave Shikoku Island. The thrill of crossing the Vine Bridge, the tranquility of the mountain vistas, and the warmth of the local people will serve as a constant reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world, waiting to be discovered.

As I prepare for my next adventure, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. I know that the journey ahead will be filled with new challenges, new discoveries, and new opportunities to learn and grow. And I am confident that, with an open mind and a spirit of adventure, I will be able to make the most of every moment and create memories that will last a lifetime. For dinner, I enjoyed a special meal at Munagin, a restaurant known for its Unagi (freshwater eel).
