Stepping Back in Time and Soaking in Tradition

Another day, another adventure unfolds! Today, my exploration of Shikoku Island took me to Matsuyama, a city brimming with history and culture. I was eager to delve into its iconic landmarks and savor the local flavors. As an urban beekeeper from Hamburg, I always appreciate how cities blend nature and history, and Matsuyama seemed to offer a perfect balance of both.

My day started with a hearty breakfast at Inonakanokawazu. This charming spot was a delightful introduction to the local cuisine. The traditional Japanese breakfast set me up perfectly for the day's adventures. From there, I made my way to the famed Dogo Onsen Main Building, ready to experience one of Japan's oldest and most revered hot springs. It felt particularly special to visit during the summer, a time when the onsen is less crowded, allowing for a more serene experience.

The true essence of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing them fully, embracing their history, and connecting with their culture.

The Dogo Onsen Main Building is an architectural marvel. The three-story wooden structure exudes history, and I couldn't help but think of the many people who had come here seeking relaxation and healing over the centuries. It’s said that the bathhouse even inspired the iconic setting in Studio Ghibli’s *Spirited Away*. I opted for one of the more comprehensive bathing packages, which allowed me access to the upper levels and a private tatami room after my soak. The waters were wonderfully soothing, and I emerged feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. The experience was truly immersive, and I took my time wandering through the labyrinthine passageways, soaking up the atmosphere.

After the onsen, I decided to explore Matsuyama Castle. The castle is strategically perched atop Mount Katsuyama, offering panoramic views of the city and the Seto Inland Sea. It was a bit of a climb, but the views were well worth the effort. I chose to walk up, enjoying the surrounding forest, but there's also a convenient ropeway and chairlift for those who prefer a less strenuous ascent. The castle itself is one of only twelve original castles remaining in Japan, having survived the post-feudal era since 1868. The main keep has multiple wings, which made exploring the castle complex particularly interesting.

Inside, the castle museum provided a fascinating glimpse into the region's history and the feudal period. I learned about the castle's construction in the early 17th century and its role in the area's defense. It was fascinating to see displays of armor and artifacts from the Edo period. The castle grounds are also known as a popular cherry blossom spot, and I could only imagine how beautiful it must be in early April when the cherry trees are in full bloom. Even without the blossoms, the views were stunning, with the city sprawling below and the sea shimmering in the distance.

For lunch, I ventured to Eki-mae Shokudo, a local eatery recommended for its authentic Japanese cuisine. This cozy spot is known for its regional dishes and seasonal ingredients. I tried one of the set meals, which included a variety of small dishes showcasing the local flavors. It was a delicious and affordable way to experience the culinary heritage of the region. The restaurant's warm and friendly service added to the overall experience, making me feel like a welcome guest.

In the late afternoon, after exploring the castle, I took a leisurely stroll through the city center, making my way towards Okaido Shopping Street. This bustling arcade is a vibrant mix of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. I enjoyed browsing the local crafts and sampling some of the street food. I couldn't resist trying Botchan dango, a sweet dumpling made from sticky rice, a local specialty. The shopping street was alive with activity, and I enjoyed the lively atmosphere.

As evening approached, I sought out Osusowake Shokudo Mado for dinner. This restaurant is known for its commitment to authentic Japanese flavors and its use of fresh, local ingredients. The menu featured a variety of classic dishes, including rice bowls and seasonal vegetables. I opted for the chef's special, which was a beautifully prepared fish dish. The flavors were delicate and refined, and the presentation was impeccable. The restaurant's inviting ambiance and warm hospitality made it a perfect place to unwind after a busy day.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out tone dining bar, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and extensive drink menu. I enjoyed a couple of local craft beers while chatting with some of the locals. It was a great way to experience the city's nightlife and get a sense of the local culture. The bar had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and I felt right at home.

Before heading back to my guesthouse for the night, I took a final stroll through the city center, admiring the illuminated landmarks and soaking up the atmosphere. Matsuyama had truly captured my heart with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. As I walked, I thought about my plans for tomorrow. I will be heading to Takamatsu to explore Shikoku Village and Ritsurin Garden. I am looking forward to diving deeper into the region's cultural heritage and natural landscapes.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I appreciate these solo adventures. Traveling alone allows me to fully immerse myself in the experiences and connect with the local culture on a deeper level. It's a chance to step outside my comfort zone and discover new perspectives. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings and to continue my exploration of Shikoku Island.

Until then, cheers from Matsuyama!
