Exploring the Serenity and Culture of Shikoku Island
Day 10: A Farewell to Shikoku: Reflecting on a Journey of Culture and Cars
Thomas concludes his solo trip in Shikoku, exploring Dragon Rock, the Automobile Museum, and savoring local cuisine before heading home.
Adventures on the Last Day
As my Shikoku adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences and serene beauty that this island has offered. Today was a blend of natural wonders, automotive history, and, of course, delicious food, all wrapped up in the unique charm that defines Shikoku. It’s a bittersweet feeling knowing that tomorrow I’ll be heading back to Hamburg, but I’m also filled with gratitude for the memories I’ve made.
My final day began with a hearty breakfast at Tosa Rokkon. The restaurant was nestled in Kami, Kochi, and offered a delightful start to the day. The ambiance was warm, service was attentive, and the food was delicious. I savored every bite, appreciating the blend of traditional flavors and modern culinary techniques. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.
The Mystical Dragon Rock
Next on the agenda was a visit to Dragon Rock, a natural landmark that I’d heard whispers about from fellow travelers. After about 20 kilometers, I kept an eye out for local signs indicating 'Dragon Rock' or 'Ryuu no Ishi' in Japanese. The rock formation is located near the Fushiroyama area. As I approached, the scenery transformed into a landscape of lush greenery and towering mountains. It was easy to see why this spot is revered by locals and visitors alike.

The hike to Dragon Rock was invigorating, with trails winding through the verdant landscape. The rock itself is an impressive sight, its unique shape sparking the imagination. Local legends say that a dragon once roamed these skies, and Dragon Rock is a testament to its presence. I spent a good hour simply taking in the views and snapping photos. The limited parking meant a bit of a walk, but it was well worth it to soak in the tranquil atmosphere.
The journey may end, but the memories last a lifetime.
A Pit Stop at the Shikoku Automobile Museum
After communing with nature, I decided to indulge my curiosity at the Shikoku Automobile Museum. Now, I wouldn’t call myself a car fanatic, but I do appreciate the history and design behind these mechanical marvels. The museum is located in Konan, and it’s the only one of its kind on Shikoku Island. From classic cars to vintage motorcycles, the collection was a fascinating glimpse into automotive history.

The Shikoku Automobile Museum wasn't huge, but what it lacked in size, it made up for in quality. As I walked into the showroom, I was greeted by a car that needs no introduction – the DeLorean DMC-12. There was also a fantastic line-up of bikes on the left side of the showroom, from BMWs to Royal Enfields and BSAs. I was particularly impressed by a pristine Toyota 2000GT, a true icon of Japanese automotive design. The museum also featured a number of race cars, each with its own story of speed and competition. I learned that the museum is owned by Toyota and the collection is made up of privately-owned vehicles. I was glad that these owners have let their cars be shown to the public, rather than storing them away in a dark garage somewhere. I spent a good couple of hours wandering through the exhibits, admiring the craftsmanship and learning about the evolution of automobiles.
Lunch and Local Flavors
By lunchtime, I was ready to refuel, so I headed to Hakkenden Nankoku Osone. I was ready for a hearty meal, and Hakkenden Nankoku Osone did not disappoint. The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign, and the menu featured a variety of regional specialties. I opted for a set meal that included grilled fish, rice, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. The flavors were authentic and satisfying, providing a perfect taste of Kochi’s culinary heritage.

Evening Reflections and Culinary Delights
As the day wound down, I found myself at Restaurant&Cafe Riina for dinner. Situated in Shikokuchuo, it was a bit of a drive, but I had heard great things about their Mediterranean-inspired dishes. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a menu that highlighted fresh, local ingredients. I savored a delicious meal, reflecting on the day’s adventures and the entire Shikoku journey. It was a fitting end to my culinary exploration of the island.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out BAR OOKUNI. I figured a nightcap was in order to celebrate the end of my travels. The bar had a laid-back atmosphere, and the bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. I ordered a local craft beer and chatted with a few patrons, sharing stories of my Shikoku adventures. It was a great way to unwind and soak in the local vibe one last time.
