Exploring the Enchanting Forests of Yakushima
Day 8: Coastal Serenity and Culinary Delights: Discovering Yakushima's Hidden Gems
Immerse yourself in Yakushima's beauty: coastal views from the lighthouse, soothing onsen experiences, and savoring local flavors.
Chasing Lighthouses and Soaking in Seaside Bliss
Today was all about embracing the coastal charm of Yakushima, a stark contrast to the dense forests I've been exploring. It was a day of lighthouses, seaside hot springs, and savoring the island's unique culinary offerings. I was excited to discover new facets of this enchanting island.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Il Mare. The Italian restaurant close to the airport offered a delightful start to the day. I savored a simple breakfast of toast and coffee, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead. It was a comforting taste of home before diving back into the heart of Yakushima.
First on the agenda was the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The drive there was an adventure in itself, navigating narrow roads that wound through lush greenery. As I approached the lighthouse, the landscape opened up, revealing breathtaking views of the coastline. The lighthouse stood proudly against the backdrop of the azure sea, a beacon of maritime safety since 1897. I couldn't go inside, as it's unmanned, but standing there, I felt a sense of awe at the natural and spectacular coastline. The panoramic views stretched out before me, with Kouerrabu Island visible in the distance, and the faint outlines of Kyushu mainland and the Tokara Islands completing the picturesque scene. It was a perfect spot to reflect and soak in the serene beauty of Yakushima.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments, like gazing at the endless horizon from a solitary lighthouse.
After the lighthouse, it was time for a truly unique experience: Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen, a seaside hot spring that can only be accessed during low tide. Timing was crucial, and I made sure to check the tide schedule before heading over. As I arrived, the tide was indeed low, revealing the natural pools nestled among the rocks. This onsen is unlike any I've ever been to. The pools are formed by natural depressions in the shore, with the hot spring water mingling with the seawater. It's a mixed bathing experience, and while swimsuits are prohibited, women can wear a bathing towel.

The experience was both exhilarating and a little intimidating. Being so exposed, with the path to the onsen elevated, made me feel a bit self-conscious at first. However, the allure of soaking in the warm, mineral-rich water while listening to the waves crashing nearby quickly overshadowed any initial hesitation. The water was wonderfully warm, and the combination of the hot spring and the sea breeze created a sense of blissful relaxation. It was a truly unique and unforgettable experience, connecting me with nature in a way I hadn't anticipated.
After my seaside soak, I was ready for lunch. I headed to Kamogawa Restaurant, known for its local cuisine and reasonable prices. I decided to try the flying fish set meal, a Yakushima specialty. The fish was served fried, and it was absolutely delicious. The crispy exterior gave way to a tender, flavorful interior, and I savored every bite. The set meal also included miso soup, rice, and other small dishes, providing a delightful taste of Yakushima's culinary heritage. The restaurant was bustling with both locals and tourists, a testament to its popularity and quality.

As the afternoon waned, I decided to treat myself to a relaxing drink at Seirios, a local bar known for its cozy atmosphere. I opted for a local craft beer, wanting to try something unique to Yakushima. The bar had a welcoming vibe, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff, learning more about the island and its culture. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration and soak in the local atmosphere.

For dinner, I chose SamPotei, a restaurant that came highly recommended for its dishes made from local ingredients. I wasn't disappointed. The ambiance was charming, and the menu featured a variety of Yakushima specialties. I decided to try the flying fish pasta, a dish that sounded intriguing and unique. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the flying fish added a distinct flavor that was both savory and slightly sweet. The riverside seats added a touch of magic to the dining experience. The gentle sounds of the water created a peaceful and romantic atmosphere, making it a perfect end to a wonderful day.

As I reflect on today, I'm struck by the diverse experiences Yakushima has to offer. From the panoramic views at the lighthouse to the invigorating onsen experience and the delightful culinary journey, each moment was a testament to the island's unique charm. It's amazing how much this island can offer.
Tomorrow marks my last day on Yakushima, and I plan to make the most of it by visiting Yakushima National Park and the Kigensugi Cedar. I'm excited to immerse myself in the island's natural beauty one last time before heading back to Toronto. I'll be sure to grab breakfast at Aqua Cafe before heading out and lunch at Yakushima Airport Restaurant before my flight. I might even squeeze in a quick stop at The North Face shop for a souvenir. It's going to be a bittersweet day, saying goodbye to this enchanting island, but I know I'll carry the memories with me for a lifetime.
This trip has been a reminder of the importance of solo travel, allowing me to connect with myself and the world around me in a way that's truly transformative. I encourage everyone to embrace the unknown, step outside their comfort zone, and embark on their own solo adventure. You never know what incredible experiences await you.
As I prepare for my final day, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this magical island. Yakushima has captured my heart, and I know I'll be back someday to rediscover its hidden gems and embrace its serene beauty once again.
