Arrival in Yakushima: A Promising Start

After a long journey from Toronto, via Tokyo and Kagoshima, I've finally arrived in Yakushima! The air here is thick with humidity and the scent of pine, a welcome change from the city. I’m excited to explore this island known for its ancient forests and unique ecosystem. Although I missed a portable phone charger, sunscreen, and a Japanese phrasebook, I’m determined to make the most of my adventure.

The ferry ride from Kagoshima was smooth, and as we approached the island, the dramatic silhouette of the mountains piercing the sky was breathtaking. It reminded me of growing up in Sarnen, Switzerland, surrounded by the Alps. The familiar feeling of being embraced by nature immediately put me at ease. I could already tell this solo trip was going to be something special.

My first order of business after disembarking was to grab a bite at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. Located near the airport, this charming eatery has an old-school vibe reminiscent of traditional soba shops. I secured a meal ticket at the counter and ordered a steaming bowl of udon. While the prices might be a bit steep, it was a part of the airport experience! It was a hearty way to start my culinary explorations on the island.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.

Exploring Heritage and Conservation

With my stomach happy, I set off to the Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center. Nestled in the Anbo area, the center is surrounded by the island’s natural beauty. The Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center provides visitors with a wealth of information on Yakushima National Park and its natural environment. The center is designed to inspire respect for nature and promote sustainable practices among its visitors.

Inside, I was immediately impressed by the exhibits detailing the island's unique flora and fauna. As someone passionate about sustainable living, I appreciated the emphasis on conservation efforts. The visual representations showing how the maximum heights of local plants change depending on the altitude were particularly fascinating. I also enjoyed the nature photography exhibit, which offered a glimpse into the seasonal beauty of Yakushima. The center provided valuable insights into the scale of Yakushima's mountains, initiatives for protecting the local ecosystem, and etiquette for hiking the mountain trails to reduce environmental impact.

A Taste of Local Flavors

For lunch, I ventured to Katagiri Flying Fish Restaurant. It was a delightful culinary gem that specializes in Japanese regional cuisine with an Italian twist. Known for its exquisite specialties like flying fish ramen, I decided to try the flying fish HITSUMABUSHI, which is similar to the 'Teriyaki' taste. It is chopped 'kabayaki' flying fish on rice served in a lacquer ware container called 'Hitsu'. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with the staff about local ingredients and cooking techniques.

After lunch, I decided to explore the Yakushima Market. I was hoping to find some local crafts and produce. The Yakushima Market is a treasure trove for visitors looking to immerse themselves in the local culture and culinary delights. The friendly vendors are always eager to share their knowledge and stories about their products, making the shopping experience enjoyable and educational. While there, I picked up a few small trinkets and some local tea to bring back home to David and Sophie. I know Sophie will especially love the little wooden carvings of the island's animals.

Dinner at Yakushima Gallery Restaurant

As evening approached, I made my way to Yakushima Gallery Restaurant for dinner. Yakushima Gallery Restaurant is known for its authentic Japanese cuisine, where local flavors meet traditional techniques in an unforgettable dining experience. I savored every bite, reflecting on the day’s adventures. The restaurant was a perfect blend of art and cuisine, and I felt a deep connection to the island's culture.

Reflecting on the Day and Looking Ahead

Today was a whirlwind of new experiences, and I'm already captivated by Yakushima's charm. The weather in July is warm and humid, with temperatures around 29°C during the day and a more temperate 26°C in the evening. I’m glad I packed my rain jacket, as July tends to be rainy.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Shiratani Unsui Gorge and Wilson's Stump. I've heard the gorge is like stepping into a Studio Ghibli film, and I can't wait to hike through the moss-covered forest. I’m also looking forward to trying the local breakfast spot, hiyoriya, and ending the day at Cafe & Bar RainTree.

This trip is already proving to be a wonderful escape, and I'm excited to see what other treasures Yakushima holds. Good night from this enchanting island!

P.S. I really need to remember that portable phone charger next time!
