A Day of Coastal Charms and Turtle Tales
Today was a beautiful blend of education, exploration, and the simple joy of spending time with friends. Yakushima continues to surprise me with its diverse offerings, from its commitment to preserving its natural wonders to its stunning coastal views. It's days like these that make me so grateful for this adventure.
Our day began with breakfast at Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter. The name itself promised a unique start, and it certainly delivered. The tofu was the star of the meal. It was so warm, and eating it made me feel like I was being hugged from the inside out. It was a delightful and nourishing way to begin our day, fueling us up for the adventures ahead.

After breakfast, we headed to the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall. I've always been fascinated by these gentle creatures, and I was eager to learn more about them and the conservation efforts in place to protect them. The hall itself is quite small, but it's packed with information. We learned about the different species of sea turtles that nest on Yakushima's beaches, their life cycles, and the threats they face.

The manager was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about sea turtles. He explained everything so clearly, and it was evident how dedicated he was to protecting these animals. One of the highlights was seeing the baby turtles up close. They were so tiny and adorable, and it was heartwarming to know that the hall was playing a role in ensuring their survival.
The beauty of Yakushima lies not only in its ancient forests but also in its dedication to preserving its precious marine life. After the Sea Turtle Hall, we drove to Isso Lighthouse. The lighthouse itself is a striking white structure that stands proudly against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean. The views from the top were simply breathtaking. We could see the coastline stretching out in both directions, with the waves crashing against the rocks below.

It was a perfect spot for taking photos and simply soaking in the natural beauty of Yakushima. The salty breeze invigorated us as we admired the panoramic views, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such splendor. I couldn't help but think about all the vessels that the lighthouse has guided safely through these waters over the years.
For lunch, we stopped at the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. The restaurant had a charming, rustic ambiance, and the menu featured local dishes made with fresh ingredients from Yakushima. I decided to try the flying fish ramen, which came highly recommended. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the flying fish added a unique, slightly smoky taste. It was a delicious and satisfying meal that gave me a true taste of Yakushima's culinary scene. Liam opted for a venison dish, and he was equally impressed with the quality and flavors.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we decided to explore a bit of Isso Fishing Village. The village had a quaint, charming atmosphere, with narrow streets and traditional houses. We wandered around, taking in the sights and sounds of daily life. The locals were friendly and welcoming, and we felt a sense of peace and tranquility as we strolled through the village.
For dinner, we chose SamPotei, a restaurant in Anbo known for its local dishes and jazzy vibes. The reviews I read mentioned the high-quality ingredients and the outstanding service, and it did not disappoint. I tried the Ume Suisho, a local delicacy made of fish cartilage marinated with ume plum, and the scallops. The combination of flavors and textures was intriguing, and I enjoyed trying something new. Liam enjoyed a craft beer from a local brewery, and we both appreciated the kindness of the staff.

To cap off the evening, we decided to check out Hitomekuri, a bar known for its relaxed atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring. We sipped on local drinks and chatted about our favorite moments from the day. The bar had a cozy, intimate feel, and it was a great way to connect with the local culture.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and appreciation. Yakushima has a way of capturing your heart and leaving you with unforgettable memories. The island's commitment to preserving its natural beauty and its unique cultural offerings make it a truly special place. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, as we plan to visit the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse and the Ohko Waterfall. Before that, we will make sure to have breakfast at hiyoriya. And maybe, just maybe, we'll find some time to do some shopping at Pukaridō. I'm also looking forward to trying the lunch at Wakadaisho and dinner at a heavenly kitchen.
I’m also very happy that I didn’t forget my rain jacket today. It’s been essential for the trip, especially with the frequent rain showers. However, I’m still kicking myself for forgetting the insect repellent and portable charger. Those would have been incredibly useful, especially during our hikes. I’ll definitely make a note to pack them next time. Good thing Liam has his portable charger.
“The best journey takes you back to yourself” I feel this quote really encapsulates my time here in Yakushima. It is a place where you can truly connect with nature and find a sense of peace and tranquility. I am so grateful for this experience and I know that it will stay with me long after I leave this magical island.
