Finding Paradise in Peneda-Gerês

Today was all about immersing myself in the raw beauty of Peneda-Gerês National Park. From chasing waterfalls to soaking in panoramic views, it was a day that reminded me why I crave these solo adventures. The park's charm lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but also in the warmth of its people and the delicious simplicity of its cuisine. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to truly connect with nature and yourself.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Saber ao Borralho in Soajo. It was a quaint, cozy spot that promised an authentic taste of the region. The name itself, "Saber ao Borralho," hints at a place where flavors are deeply rooted in tradition. One possible meaning of 'borralho' is 'a warm and comfortable place', and that's exactly the feeling I got when I stepped inside. The restaurant was easy to find, and I was immediately enveloped in a rustic atmosphere, complete with a crackling fireplace. It felt like stepping back in time, a far cry from the efficient modernity of Dublin. I ordered a traditional breakfast, eager to fuel up for the day’s adventures. It was simple, yet satisfying – fresh bread, local cheese, and strong coffee. A perfect start to a day of exploration.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to Cascatas de Fecha de Barjas, also known as the Tahiti Waterfalls. The drive itself was a treat, winding through lush green landscapes and quaint villages. I had read so much about these waterfalls, and the reality didn't disappoint. The Cascatas de Fecha de Barjas are a series of cascades and lagoons that culminate in a larger pool, inviting visitors to take a refreshing dip. The path to the falls was a bit rocky, and I was thankful for my hiking boots. I should have remembered to buy sunscreen in Gerês yesterday, as the sun was already beating down. As I descended, the sound of rushing water grew louder, and soon I was greeted by the sight of the cascading falls. The water was crystal clear, and the surrounding rocks were adorned with vibrant green moss. It was a truly magical scene. I spent a good hour exploring the area, taking photos, and simply soaking in the natural beauty. I even braved a quick dip in one of the pools, which was invigorating despite the cool water. It was the perfect way to escape the summer heat and feel truly connected to nature.

Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are the ones that lead you to hidden gems, where the beauty of nature unfolds in its purest form.

After the refreshing interlude at the waterfalls, my stomach started to rumble, reminding me it was time for lunch. I drove to Restaurante Espigueiro do Soajo, known for its traditional Minho cuisine. The restaurant was easy to spot, and I was warmly greeted by the staff. I decided to try one of the local specialties, savoring every bite of the hearty, home-cooked meal. The flavors were robust and comforting, a true taste of Portuguese culinary heritage. It was the kind of meal that sticks to your ribs and warms you from the inside out.

With renewed energy, I headed to Miradouro da Ermida, a viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of the Gerês mountains and the surrounding landscape. The drive up to the viewpoint was steep, but the views along the way were worth it. The Miradouro da Ermida, at about 550m altitude, offers views of the Gerês mountains, the life of the village, the rural landscape and the historical elements and traditional architecture in a panorama of prodigious beauty. As I reached the top, I was greeted by a breathtaking panorama. The rolling hills, lush greenery, and quaint villages stretched out before me, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. I spent a long time simply gazing at the landscape, feeling a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the power of nature to soothe the soul. I could see the village of Ermida nestled in the valley below, its traditional architecture adding to the charm of the scene. The viewpoint was well-maintained, with pathways that invited leisurely strolls. I took my time exploring the area, capturing photos and soaking in the atmosphere. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

Before dinner, I stopped by Supermercado Amanhecer Gerês to pick up a few essentials – mostly insect repellent, as I had foolishly forgotten to pack it. The supermarket was conveniently located and well-stocked, offering a range of local products. It was a quick stop, but it allowed me to replenish my supplies and prepare for the evening ahead.

For dinner, I chose Restaurante Adega Ramalho, drawn by its reputation for traditional Minho cuisine and cozy atmosphere. The restaurant was a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the effort to find. As I stepped inside, I was greeted by a warm and inviting ambiance, with rustic décor and friendly staff. The Adega Ramalho presents a rustic, comfortable and welcoming environment, located in the heart of Gerês, is ideal for savoring traditional Minho cuisine. I ordered another local specialty, eager to experience more of the region’s culinary delights. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic flavors. The wine, of course, was also excellent, perfectly complementing the meal. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, with a full stomach and a happy heart.

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Peneda-Gerês National Park has exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and culinary delights. It’s a place that has captured my heart, and I know I will be back again soon. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a visit to Poço da Gola and Porto da Laje. I plan to start the day with breakfast at Restaurante Cantinho do Antigamente, followed by lunch at Restaurante Retiro do Gerês. In the evening, I'll be dining at O Encontro - Por Marcação and perhaps visiting the Churrasqueira Parque bar. I’m excited to see what new adventures tomorrow brings! It is a shame Liam couldn't join me on this trip, but I'm sure he's enjoying the Dublin tech scene.

This solo journey has been a reminder of the importance of disconnecting from the everyday and reconnecting with nature. The simple act of hiking through the park, breathing in the fresh air, and listening to the sounds of the forest has been incredibly therapeutic. I feel refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to tackle whatever challenges lie ahead. And who knows, maybe I’ll even pick up a few more Gaelic phrases along the way!
