A Day of Refreshing Dips and Delightful Discoveries

Today was all about embracing the natural beauty and local flavors of Peneda-Gerês. I set out with a sense of adventure, eager to explore the hidden corners of this stunning national park and immerse myself in its serene atmosphere. From the refreshing waters of Poço da Gola to the charming tastes of local cuisine, it was a day filled with delightful surprises and unforgettable moments.

The day began, as most do here, with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Cantinho do Antigamente. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air, a comforting start before heading out into the wilderness. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal of local cheese, crusty bread, and a strong café com leite. It's amazing how such simple pleasures can set the tone for a day of exploration.

My first stop was Poço da Gola, a waterfall I had been particularly excited about. The bus ride there was scenic, winding through lush green hills and quaint villages. As I approached the trail, the sound of rushing water grew louder, building anticipation. The hike down to the waterfall was relatively easy, and soon enough, I was standing before a cascade of crystal-clear water plunging into a refreshing pool. The sun was high, and the water looked incredibly inviting.

I couldn't resist taking a dip. The water was invigorating, a welcome contrast to the warm air. Surrounded by lush vegetation and the soothing sounds of nature, it felt like a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There were a few other people around, but the atmosphere remained peaceful and serene. I spent a good hour swimming and basking in the sun on the smooth rocks nearby, feeling completely rejuvenated.

After drying off and soaking in the views, I made my way to Porto da Laje. This spot offered a different kind of beauty. It wasn't a dramatic waterfall, but rather a tranquil river beach with calm, clear waters perfect for swimming. The landscape was dotted with large granite boulders, creating a unique and picturesque setting. I waded into the cool water, enjoying the gentle current and the stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

For lunch, I headed to Restaurante Retiro do Gerês, a local favorite known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. I decided to try the *cozido*, a hearty stew of various meats and vegetables. It was a flavorful and filling meal, exactly what I needed after a morning of swimming and hiking. The restaurant had a rustic charm, with wooden tables and friendly staff who made me feel right at home.

As I savored my lunch, I couldn't help but reflect on how much I was enjoying this solo adventure. Being alone allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience, to connect with nature on a deeper level, and to appreciate the simple joys of life. It's a far cry from my organized life back in Dublin, where every minute is planned and accounted for. This spontaneity feels liberating.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones where you allow yourself to get lost in the moment.

In the late afternoon, I decided to check out Churrasqueira Parque, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and grilled specialties. Although I don’t usually frequent bars, I was intrigued by the description and thought it would be a great way to experience the local culture. I ordered a glass of vinho verde, a light and refreshing green wine from the region, and watched as locals gathered to chat and unwind after a long day. The air was filled with laughter and the aroma of grilled meats, creating a warm and inviting ambiance.

I struck up a conversation with a friendly local who shared stories about the park and its history. He told me about the traditional ways of life in the region, the importance of preserving the natural environment, and the challenges faced by the local communities. It was fascinating to hear his perspective and to learn more about the cultural heritage of Peneda-Gerês.

For dinner, I had made a reservation at O Encontro - Por Marcação, a restaurant highly recommended for its innovative take on traditional Portuguese dishes. The restaurant was a bit more upscale than the others I had visited, but the food was well worth the splurge. I opted for the roasted goat, a local delicacy, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The presentation was exquisite, and the service was impeccable.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I had enjoyed. From the refreshing waters of Poço da Gola to the charming flavors of local cuisine, it had been a day filled with delightful surprises and unforgettable moments. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this stunning national park and to connect with its natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Back at my campsite, I brewed a cup of herbal tea and sat by the crackling fire, gazing up at the starlit sky. The sounds of the forest enveloped me, creating a sense of peace and tranquility. I thought about Liam back in Dublin, wondering what he was up to. I missed him, of course, but I also knew that this solo adventure was something I needed to do for myself. It was a chance to reconnect with nature, to rediscover my inner self, and to find inspiration for the future.

As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel excited about what tomorrow would bring. The itinerary includes a visit to Miradouro da Fraga Negra and Cabana da Rocalva. I am looking forward to seeing the views from the Miradouro and exploring the unique architecture of Cabana da Rocalva. Plus, I am excited to try the local cuisine at Encosta do Rio, Restaurante Cerdeira, and Vai... Vai Gerês. And maybe I'll even pick up some souvenirs at Xana's Cosmetics. Each day here seems to bring new adventures and discoveries, and I am grateful for every moment.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy sunscreen and insect repellent tomorrow. I really should have remembered to pack them. My fair complexion is definitely not appreciating the Portuguese sun!
