Discovering Kanazawa: A Cultural Journey in Japan
Day 11: A Day of Literary Pilgrimages and Rustic Charms in Kanazawa
Exploring Kanazawa's literary heritage and the serene beauty of Shirakawa-go's traditional villages—a journey through history and culture.
Whispers of the Past, Echoes of Tradition
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of intellectual exploration and immersion into Japan's rich rural heritage. From the quiet halls of literary giants to the timeless landscapes of traditional villages, every moment was a step back in time, a whisper of stories waiting to be heard.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at NO SIDE. Maximilian and I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal that fueled us for the day ahead. The cozy atmosphere was the perfect start before diving into Kanazawa's cultural depths. It's funny, even after living in Germany for years, I still sometimes crave the familiar flavors of a good Puerto Rican breakfast – maybe I'll try to recreate some Japanese breakfast dishes when we get back to Heidelberg!
First on our itinerary was the Kanazawa Literary Hall. As a lover of literature, I was eager to explore this haven dedicated to the written word. The hall itself is a beautiful space, filled with the echoes of literary discussions and the weight of countless stories. I was particularly drawn to the exhibits showcasing local authors, each with their unique perspective on life in Kanazawa. It was fascinating to learn about their inspirations and the impact of the city on their work. I even made a note of a few names to look up later; it seems Kanazawa has a vibrant literary scene.

In every corner of Kanazawa, stories linger, waiting to be discovered and shared.
Leaving the Literary Hall, we set off for Shirakawa-go Gassho-Zukuri Minka-en, an open-air museum showcasing traditional gassho-style farmhouses. The journey itself was an experience, the landscape transforming from urban streets to rolling hills and verdant fields. As we approached Shirakawa-go, the iconic thatched roofs of the farmhouses came into view, creating a scene straight out of a postcard. It felt like stepping into another world, a place where time stood still.

Walking through the Minka-en, I was struck by the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the gassho-style architecture. The steep, thatched roofs, designed to withstand heavy snowfall, were a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the people who built them. Inside the farmhouses, we explored the living spaces, imagining the lives of the families who once called these structures home. Maximilian, with his data scientist's mind, was fascinated by the structural engineering of the houses, while I was more captivated by the stories they held.
After immersing ourselves in the beauty of Shirakawa-go, we continued to Ainokura, another village known for its gassho-style farmhouses. Ainokura, however, offered a more intimate and serene experience. The village was smaller and less crowded than Shirakawa-go, allowing us to wander through its quaint streets at our own pace. We explored the traditional farmhouses, some still inhabited by locals, and observed artisans at work, preserving the traditional way of life. It was a privilege to witness their dedication and skill.

For lunch, we stopped at Genzaemon, a local restaurant known for its authentic Kanazawa cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I decided to try the jibuni, a Kanazawa-style duck stew, while Maximilian opted for the fresh seafood. Each dish was a burst of flavor, a testament to the region's culinary heritage. The fresh seafood and local sake were particularly memorable! I made a mental note to try and recreate the jibuni back in Heidelberg – it would be a delicious reminder of our time in Kanazawa.

In the late afternoon, we made a stop at Hakuichi Kanazawa Hyakubangai Store. I couldn't resist browsing through the dazzling array of gold leaf products, from crafts to cosmetics. It's amazing how gold leaf can transform everyday items into luxurious treasures. I picked up a few small souvenirs for friends and family, hoping to share a touch of Kanazawa's sparkle with them.

Before heading back to the hotel, we had dinner at Ippudo, a ramen restaurant that promised a comforting end to a long day. The ramen was delicious, the broth rich and flavorful, and the noodles perfectly cooked. It was the perfect way to warm ourselves after a day of exploring in the July weather. As we slurped our noodles, we reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Kanazawa.

As we walked back to the APA Hotel Kanazawa Nomachi, the city lights twinkled around us. I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today had been a journey through time, a celebration of literature, history, and tradition. From the quiet halls of the Literary Hall to the rustic charm of Shirakawa-go and Ainokura, every moment was a treasure to be cherished.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Chirihama Beach Driveway, where we can drive along the sandy shores, and visit Myozenji Temple, known for its beautiful architecture. I'm especially excited about the beach drive – it sounds like a unique and exhilarating experience. We'll also be trying out some local eateries, including Turban Curry Main Store for lunch and Kanazawa Setsuri for dinner. And of course, no trip is complete without a visit to a local bar, so we'll be stopping by The Londonya Bar for a nightcap.
Before drifting off to sleep, I made a note to buy an umbrella and a Japanese phrasebook. It seems I’ve forgotten some of the essentials! Despite the summer heat, a sudden downpour is always a possibility, and a few basic Japanese phrases would definitely come in handy. After all, it’s the little things that can make a big difference when you’re exploring a new place.
