First Day Blues (the Good Kind!)

After months of dreaming, planning, and packing (and almost forgetting my universal power adapter!), I finally arrived in Chefchaouen today. The journey from Frankfurt was smooth, with a layover in Tangier, and the scenic bus ride offered a tantalizing glimpse of the Moroccan countryside. I could already feel the shift in energy, the transition from the familiar efficiency of Germany to the vibrant, more relaxed pace of life here. I'm excited to share all my adventures in the 'Blue Pearl' with you!

Stepping off the bus, I was immediately enveloped in the city’s charm. It’s hard to describe the feeling of seeing Chefchaouen for the first time – the cascade of blue buildings tumbling down the hillside is simply breathtaking. It’s like walking into a dream, a world painted in every imaginable shade of azure and indigo. The air is crisp and clean, a welcome change from the city air I'm used to, carrying the scent of spices and something subtly floral I couldn’t quite place. Maybe it was the orange blossoms I'd read about.

My first order of business? Check into Hotel Barcelona. It's perfectly situated within the Medina, offering a cozy and convenient base for my explorations. The staff greeted me with warm smiles and a refreshing glass of mint tea – a quintessential Moroccan welcome. After settling in, I couldn't resist diving straight into the heart of Chefchaouen: the Medina.

The Chefchaouen Medina is a labyrinth of narrow, winding alleyways, each corner revealing a new photographic opportunity. Sunlight filters through the gaps between buildings, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadow on the blue-washed walls. I wandered aimlessly, letting my curiosity guide me, completely losing track of time. It was easy to get lost, but honestly, getting lost is half the fun! Every doorway, every archway, every cobbled step seemed to whisper stories of centuries past.

To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.

I stumbled upon artisan shops overflowing with colorful textiles, intricate metalwork, and handcrafted leather goods. The shopkeepers were friendly and welcoming, eager to share their craft and stories. I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs – a beautiful hand-woven scarf and a small ceramic tagine, a reminder of my time in this magical place. Of course, I had to stop by Blue. concept store, a gem I had read about before leaving Heidelberg. It was a treasure trove of unique finds, blending traditional Moroccan artistry with modern design. I snagged a beautiful, hand-painted bowl that I know will look perfect on our dining table back home.

For breakfast, I ventured to Cafe Clock, a place I'd seen raved about online. The reviews were spot on! The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was buzzing with a mix of locals and tourists. I opted for the avocado toast - a little taste of home with a Moroccan twist. Sitting on the rooftop terrace, sipping my coffee and soaking in the panoramic views of the Medina, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. I am so glad I decided to do this solo trip. Maximilian was supportive as ever, but I needed this time for myself.

Lunch was at Restaurant Bab Ssour, recommended by a local I met in the Medina. This place was a true hidden gem! Tucked away down a few steps, it offered a cozy and authentic dining experience. I feasted on a variety of vegan starters – flavorful bean and lentil dishes, and the most amazing Moroccan salads. The food was fresh, the service was friendly, and the prices were incredibly reasonable. It was the perfect spot to refuel after a morning of exploring.

After lunch, I made my way to the Kasbah, a historic fortress located in the heart of Chefchaouen. The Kasbah offered a glimpse into the city's rich past, with its well-preserved architecture and informative exhibits. I climbed to the top of the tower for stunning views of the Medina and the surrounding Rif Mountains. The peaceful gardens within the Kasbah provided a welcome respite from the bustling streets below. It was easy to imagine life here centuries ago, a time of sultans and sieges.

Next on my list was Ras El Ma, a natural spring located just outside the Medina. The walk to Ras El Ma was a pleasant one, offering picturesque views of the countryside. Arriving at the spring, I was greeted by the sound of rushing water and the sight of locals washing clothes and collecting water. It was a lively and authentic scene, a glimpse into the everyday life of the people of Chefchaouen. I sat by the spring, enjoying the cool mist on my face and the peaceful atmosphere. It was a perfect moment of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the blue city, I made my way to Chez Hicham for dinner. This restaurant, with its charming blue details and Andalusian-style arches, offered a truly immersive dining experience. I savored a delicious Moroccan chicken salad, followed by a flavorful tagine. The staff were attentive and welcoming, making me feel right at home. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the delicious food and good company.

Before heading back to the hotel, I took one last stroll through the Medina, soaking in the magical atmosphere of the blue city at night. The streets were quieter now, illuminated by the soft glow of lanterns. The air was filled with the sound of music and laughter, a gentle reminder of the vibrant culture of Chefchaouen. I couldn't help but smile, feeling grateful for this incredible experience. I know Maximilian would have loved this. I bought him a small trinket, a blue stone, to remind him of this place.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Plaza Uta el Hamman, the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen and the View Point, I can't wait to see what new adventures await me in this enchanting blue city. I might even try to find Restaurant Bar Chaouen for a nightcap!

Tonight, as I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation for the days ahead. Chefchaouen has already captured my heart, and I can't wait to explore more of its hidden corners and uncover its many secrets. I really should have packed that lightweight rain jacket though, the weather forecast isn't looking great!

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
