Kyoto's Unexpected Delights

Today was a delightful mix of the expected and the delightfully unexpected. Maximilian and I embarked on a day that took us from the heart of Japan's railway history to the fantastical world of movie-making, and then to a cozy corner filled with rock 'n' roll. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling – the chance to immerse myself in new experiences and discover hidden gems.

Our day began with a unique culinary experience at Japanese Cooking Class Roujiya. I've always enjoyed cooking, especially recreating the flavors of my childhood in Puerto Rico, but Japanese cuisine is a whole different world. Kaori, our instructor, was wonderful. She guided us through the art of making sushi, explaining the history and culture behind each ingredient. Maximilian, ever the scientist, was fascinated by the precision and technique involved. It was such a lovely way to start the day, learning something new together and enjoying the fruits (or, rather, the sushi) of our labor.

Next on our itinerary was the Kyoto Railway Museum. As a software developer, I appreciate the intricate engineering and innovation behind technological advancements, and what better place to witness this than a museum dedicated to the history of Japan's railways? Maximilian, with his data scientist mind, was particularly excited about the Shinkansen exhibit. We spent hours wandering through the museum, marveling at the meticulously preserved locomotives and learning about the evolution of train travel in Japan. It was fascinating to see how far the technology has come.

It's the unexpected detours that often lead to the most memorable discoveries.

After immersing ourselves in the world of trains, we ventured into the realm of cinema at Toei Kyoto Studio Park. This place is like stepping back in time to the Edo period, but with a twist. It's a working film studio where you can witness the magic of movie-making firsthand. We strolled through the meticulously recreated streets, watching actors in samurai costumes film a scene. It felt surreal to be surrounded by such detailed sets and to catch a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes action. I even considered renting a kimono for a truly immersive experience, but perhaps that's something for another visit.

Lunch at Gion Mikaku was an experience in itself. This restaurant specializes in Wagyu beef, and it was some of the most tender and flavorful meat I've ever tasted. Maximilian and I opted for the teppanyaki, where the chef cooked our meal right in front of us. It was mesmerizing to watch him work his culinary magic, transforming simple ingredients into a work of art. The ambiance of the restaurant, with its traditional Japanese décor and views of the Shirakawa River, added to the overall experience.

As the evening approached, we decided to explore Kyoto's nightlife scene, and that's how we stumbled upon Rock Stock. Tucked away in a small alley, this bar is a hidden gem for music lovers. The owner, Tomo, has created a cozy and welcoming space filled with rock 'n' roll memorabilia. The music was fantastic, the drinks were strong, and the atmosphere was electric. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of sightseeing. Maximilian and I chatted with Tomo and some of the locals, sharing stories and laughter. It felt like we had stumbled upon a little piece of home away from home.

Dinner at Kyoto cuisine Hanasaki Nishikiten was a delightful end to our day. This restaurant, located near Nishiki Market, offers a refined take on traditional Kyoto cuisine. The dishes were beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. It was a culinary journey through the region's seasonal ingredients, and each bite was a testament to the chef's skill and artistry. The ambiance of the restaurant, with its elegant décor and attentive service, made for a truly memorable dining experience.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto in all its glory. From the culinary delights to the cultural landmarks to the hidden gems, this city has captured my heart in so many ways. And to think, tomorrow is our last day here! We plan to visit the Kyoto International Manga Museum and Rengeō-in Temple (Sanjūsangen-dō), and perhaps do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Kyoto Porta. I'm already feeling a pang of sadness at the thought of leaving, but I know that the memories we've made here will last a lifetime.

I'm also reminded of how much I appreciate having Maximilian by my side on these adventures. His curiosity, his enthusiasm, and his unwavering support make every experience even more special. As we prepare to bid farewell to Kyoto, I know that we'll carry a piece of this city with us wherever we go. It's been an unforgettable journey, and I can't wait to see what adventures await us in the future.
