Join Valentina's cultural journey through Kyoto's serene shrines, ancient forests, and bustling shopping streets with Maximilian. A day of bliss!
Finding Peace and Treasures in Kyoto
Today was a beautiful blend of tranquility and excitement here in Kyoto. Maximilian and I set out to explore some of the city's most serene spots, followed by a dive into its vibrant shopping scene. It's amazing how Kyoto manages to balance its deep historical roots with a modern, bustling atmosphere.
Our day began with a visit to the enchanting Shimogamo Shrine. The crisp January air added a certain reverence to the atmosphere, and the relative quiet was a welcome change from some of the more crowded spots we’ve visited. It felt like stepping back in time, a world away from the tech-filled life I lead back in Heidelberg. As we walked through the grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of calm wash over me. The shrine’s history is so palpable; you can almost feel the presence of centuries past.

The shrine itself is stunning, with its classic architecture and meticulous details. But what truly captivated me was the Tadasu-no-Mori Forest that surrounds it.
Walking through Tadasu-no-Mori Forest was like entering another world. The towering trees, some of them hundreds of years old, created a canopy that filtered the sunlight, casting a soft, ethereal glow on the path. The forest floor was covered in a thick carpet of moss, and the air was filled with the scent of damp earth and ancient wood. It was incredibly peaceful, and Maximilian and I took our time, soaking in the tranquility. It's hard to believe that such a serene place exists right in the middle of a bustling city. I learned that Tadasu-no-Mori, meaning Forest of Correction, has been a sacred grove associated with the Kamo-jinja shrine complex for centuries. It's considered the last remnant of a primeval forest, a place that has miraculously survived countless wars and natural disasters. Walking through it, I could feel the weight of history and the resilience of nature.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest of places.
After our peaceful forest walk, we headed to Eikan-dō Temple. While I know it's particularly famous for its autumn foliage, even in winter, it held a unique charm. The bare branches of the maple trees had an elegant, skeletal beauty against the clear sky, and the temple grounds were peaceful and contemplative. I imagine it must be breathtaking in the fall, but there was something special about experiencing it in the quiet of winter.

Eikan-dō Temple, formally known as Zenrinji Temple, has a rich history. Founded in 853, it originally belonged to the Shingon sect of Buddhism before becoming part of the Jodo sect. One of its most famous features is the Mikaeri Amida statue, which depicts the Amida Buddha looking over his shoulder. Legend has it that the statue turned its head to look at the priest Eikan as he was walking through the temple, a moment of divine interaction that has made the statue a symbol of compassion and mindfulness. The temple complex itself is built on a hillside, with various halls and pavilions connected by wooden corridors. As we walked through the temple, we admired the beautiful artwork, the serene rock gardens, and the panoramic views of Kyoto. The Tahoto Pagoda, nestled among the trees, was particularly striking.
For breakfast, we started our day at Hanasaki, a cozy spot near our hotel. I had a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. It was a delightful way to fuel up for the day's adventures. Maximilian, ever the adventurous eater, tried natto (fermented soybeans) for the first time. His reaction was priceless – a mix of curiosity and slight disgust!

For lunch, we ventured to Oryori Menami, a restaurant known for its exquisite Kyoto-style cuisine. I opted for a delicate bento box filled with seasonal delicacies, while Maximilian tried the restaurant's signature udon noodles. Each dish was a work of art, both visually and gastronomically. The flavors were subtle yet complex, and the presentation was impeccable.

In the afternoon, we decided to immerse ourselves in the local shopping scene. Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street was our destination, and what a sensory overload it was! After the morning's tranquility, it was quite a contrast.
Explore the vibrant Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street, where tradition meets modern shopping and dining in the heart of Kyoto.
Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street is a covered pedestrian arcade that stretches for several blocks, filled with shops selling everything from traditional crafts to trendy fashion. It's a vibrant mix of old and new, with century-old businesses standing alongside modern boutiques and anime stores. We strolled through the arcade, taking in the sights and sounds. The street was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively atmosphere. We sampled street food, browsed souvenir shops, and watched artisans at work. It was a great way to experience the energy of modern Kyoto. I even managed to find a beautiful silk scarf as a souvenir for my mom, who I know will appreciate the intricate design and craftsmanship.
We had dinner at Anzukko, a charming little restaurant specializing in *okonomiyaki*, a savory pancake dish that’s a Kansai region specialty. It was fun watching the chef prepare our *okonomiyaki* right in front of us on a hot griddle. Maximilian, of course, had to try the spiciest version they offered, while I went for a more traditional flavor. It was a delicious and satisfying end to a long day.

As we walked back to the Cross Hotel Kyoto, hand in hand, I couldn't help but reflect on the day. It was a perfect blend of cultural immersion, natural beauty, and urban exploration. Kyoto has a way of captivating you with its contrasts – the serene temples and forests, the bustling shopping streets, the traditional crafts and modern fashion. It's a city that engages all your senses and leaves you wanting more.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit the Kyoto Railway Museum and the Toei Kyoto Studio Park. I'm especially excited about the studio park, as I've always been fascinated by Japanese cinema. Maximilian is looking forward to the railway museum, as he's a bit of a train enthusiast. I am so glad we are spending thirteen days here. It feels like we're only scratching the surface of what Kyoto has to offer.
