Whispers of Ancient Paths and Modern Flavors

Today was a beautiful blend of the old and the new, a dance between serene landscapes and exquisite culinary experiences. Maximilian and I set out to explore some of Kyoto's most treasured spots, and every moment felt like stepping further into the heart of Japan. From peaceful walks to delightful meals, today was a sensory feast.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at The Cellar Kyoto. The reviews promised a delightful start to the day, and they weren't wrong! It was the perfect way to fuel up before embarking on our journey along the Philosopher's Path. The Cellar Kyoto offered a cozy atmosphere, and the food was both comforting and energizing, setting a positive tone for the day.

The Philosopher's Path in winter is a study in tranquility. The bustling crowds of cherry blossom season are long gone, replaced by a quiet stillness that encourages reflection. As Maximilian and I strolled along the path, the gentle murmur of the canal was our constant companion. The bare trees, though stripped of their leaves, held a stark beauty against the crisp winter sky. It was easy to imagine the philosopher Nishida Kitaro deep in thought as he walked this very path, contemplating the mysteries of existence. The air was cold, but our hearts were warm with the simple joy of being together in such a peaceful place.

The best journey always takes us home, even when we didn't know we were lost.

Our next stop was the Heian Shrine, a vibrant contrast to the subdued tones of the Philosopher's Path. Although the NAKED Garden of Light event had ended just before our arrival, the shrine's grandeur was still very much on display. The bright vermilion architecture stood out boldly against the winter landscape, and the vast courtyard offered a sense of openness and calm. Maximilian was particularly impressed by the sheer scale of the Otenmon Gate and the intricate details of the dragon paintings adorning the buildings. I found myself captivated by the serene beauty of the gardens, imagining how stunning they must be in the spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. It was easy to see why this shrine is considered one of Kyoto's most important cultural treasures.

From the Heian Shrine, we made our way to Nanzen-ji Temple, another of Kyoto's Zen Buddhist jewels. The temple grounds were expansive, and we spent a good amount of time wandering through the various sub-temples and gardens. The towering Sanmon Gate was particularly impressive, and we learned that it was built to honor the soldiers who died in the siege of Osaka Castle. The Hojo, or main hall, was a highlight, featuring a stunning rock garden said to represent tigers crossing water. We also stumbled upon a fascinating aqueduct, a relic from the Meiji era, which added an unexpected touch of modernity to the ancient temple complex.

After a morning filled with exploration and cultural immersion, our appetites were calling, and we headed to Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi for lunch. This restaurant had been highly recommended, and we were eager to experience its culinary offerings. The restaurant exuded a luxurious feel, and the service was impeccable. We savored every bite, appreciating the artistry and care that went into each dish. The flavors were bold and satisfying, providing a perfect mid-day indulgence.

In the afternoon, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at the Kyoto Crafts Store. I was on the hunt for a special souvenir to remind me of our time in Kyoto, and Maximilian was hoping to find a unique gift for his mother. The store was a treasure trove of traditional Japanese crafts, from delicate ceramics to intricately woven textiles. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-painted fan, while Maximilian chose a set of exquisite lacquerware bowls. It was wonderful to support local artisans and bring home a piece of Kyoto's rich cultural heritage.

As evening approached, we prepared for our final culinary adventure of the day: dinner at French Dining Top of Kyoto. Located atop the Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto, this revolving restaurant promised not only exquisite French cuisine but also panoramic views of the city. We arrived just as the sun was setting, and the sight of Kyoto bathed in golden light was simply breathtaking. The restaurant itself was elegant and refined, with impeccable service and a sophisticated ambiance. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. Maximilian and I savored every bite, enjoying the seamless blend of French culinary techniques and Japanese ingredients. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Gion, Yasaka Shrine, and Hanamikoji Street. I am particularly excited to wander through Gion, hoping to catch a glimpse of a geisha gracefully making her way to an appointment. Maximilian is looking forward to visiting Yasaka Shrine, known for its vibrant atmosphere and beautiful architecture. And of course, we both can't wait to stroll down Hanamikoji Street, soaking in the traditional ambiance and perhaps finding a hidden teahouse to enjoy a cup of matcha. We also plan to visit Bar K6 for a nightcap.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Kyoto has a way of captivating the soul, of drawing you in with its beauty and its history. I am so grateful to be sharing this experience with Maximilian, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Until then, oyasumi nasai (good night) from Kyoto!

I am also reminded of a quote by Robert Louis Stevenson that seems to perfectly capture the essence of our journey: I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move.
