A Day of Sun, Sea, and Serenity
Today was another one of those days where Monemvasia completely stole my heart. It's amazing how a place so steeped in history can also offer such simple, pure pleasures. From the shimmering beaches to the tantalizing local cuisine, every moment felt like a postcard come to life. I’m excited to share our experiences, hoping to inspire you to seek out these hidden gems yourself.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Chrisovoulo Cafe Restaurant Bar. This wasn't just any breakfast; it was an experience. Perched on a charming balcony, we were treated to a magnificent sea view that stretched out before us. The warmth of the morning sun, combined with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, set the perfect tone for the day. Lena opted for a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and nuts, while Kai devoured a stack of pancakes drizzled with local thyme honey. I, of course, had to try their signature omelet, packed with feta cheese and sun-dried tomatoes. It was a burst of Mediterranean flavors that left me energized and ready for our adventures.

After breakfast, we decided to explore Kastraki Beach. This sandy haven, located a short drive from Monemvasia, is known for its clear blue waters and tranquil setting. As we arrived, the kids were immediately drawn to the inviting sea. Lena and I set up our umbrellas and beach mats, while Kai fearlessly plunged into the water, beckoning us to join him. The water was incredibly refreshing, and we spent a good hour swimming and splashing around like kids ourselves. I even attempted a few strokes, channeling my inner surfer from the beaches of Hilo. While I might not have been gliding gracefully over the waves, the feeling of the cool water against my skin and the sun on my face was pure bliss. Kastraki is particularly suitable for families, as the waters are gentle and safe for children. The fine sand and surrounding woods create a magical setting, perfect for people of all ages.

Monemvasia is a place where history whispers on the wind and the simple pleasures of life are amplified by the stunning natural beauty that surrounds you.
After our refreshing swim, we decided to seek out CHRISOLITHOS. This charming souvenir shop, located a short distance from Monemvasia, is more than just a place to buy trinkets; it's a celebration of Greek culture and craftsmanship. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a curated selection of handcrafted items, from traditional ceramics to exquisite jewelry. Lena, with her keen eye for art, was particularly captivated by the intricate designs on the pottery. Kai, on the other hand, was fascinated by the local delicacies, especially the olive oil and honey. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted ceramic plate depicting a scene from Monemvasia's history, while Lena found a delicate silver necklace adorned with a traditional Greek motif. Kai, of course, couldn't resist a jar of local honey to take back to Berlin.

Lunchtime found us at Aktaion, a restaurant recommended by several locals. Situated by the water, Aktaion offered stunning views of the Kastro, especially beautiful in the evening. The restaurant is known for its fresh fish dishes and traditional Greek cuisine, so we were eager to sample some local flavors. We started with a selection of appetizers, including the classic tzatziki, crispy fried calamari, and a flavorful eggplant dip. For our main courses, Lena chose the shrimp spaghetti, while Kai opted for the grilled sardines. I decided to try the pastichio, a traditional Greek baked pasta dish with meat and béchamel sauce. Every dish was a testament to the freshness of the ingredients and the skill of the chefs. The shrimps in zucchini rolls were also delicious. The owner, Maria, made our visit even more memorable with her warm hospitality.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set out to explore the Lighthouse of Monemvasia. The walk to the lighthouse was an adventure in itself, taking us along a narrow passage that connects the Laconian coast with the rock. The landscape was rugged and dramatic, with sheer cliffs rising from the sea. As we approached the lighthouse, the views were simply breathtaking. The lighthouse itself, built in 1896, stands proudly on the eastern tip of the peninsula. We learned that during World War II, it suffered damage and remained closed until it was reopened in 1945. The lighthouse has a square stone tower and smaller auxiliary buildings. Inside, a marble-carved spiral staircase leads to the tower's crown, where the lighting machines are placed. We also discovered a small exhibition about the Greek lighthouse network and the history of the Monemvasia Lighthouse. The kids were fascinated by the old photographs and nautical artifacts, while Lena and I soaked in the panoramic views of the Aegean Sea.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we decided to treat ourselves to an evening at Enetiko Cafe & Cocktail Bar. This three-story bar, located near the entrance of the Kastro, is known for its excellent drinks and panoramic views. We snagged a table on the top floor and ordered a round of cocktails. Lena chose a classic Mojito, while Kai went for a refreshing fruit punch. I, feeling adventurous, opted for one of their signature cocktails, a concoction of local herbs and spirits that was both unique and delicious. As we sipped our drinks, we watched the sunset paint the sky in a kaleidoscope of colors. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, with a mix of locals and tourists all enjoying the magical ambiance. The staff was friendly and fun, making us feel right at home.

For dinner, we ventured a bit outside Monemvasia to The Athas. This traditional Greek tavern, located a few kilometers away, is known for its authentic local dishes and reasonable prices. The setting was simple and quiet, with a relaxing atmosphere that was a welcome contrast to the bustling tourist spots in Monemvasia. We started with the local spinach pies called “saitia”. Then we tried the “gogles”, local pasta with butter and cheese. The portions were generous, and every dish was bursting with flavor. We also sampled the local wine, which was both tasteful and unbelievably affordable. The Athas tavern is known for its traditional Greek food served in a nice setting with plenty of parking.

As the day drew to a close, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible experiences we'd shared. From the sun-kissed beaches to the historical landmarks and the mouthwatering cuisine, Monemvasia had once again proven its allure. The warmth of the people, the beauty of the landscape, and the richness of the culture had all combined to create a day that we would cherish forever. As we headed back to our guesthouse, the stars twinkling above us, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a special place with my family.
Tomorrow, we are planning to explore Coin baignade, Pezoporia vrachou Monemvasias, and Monemvasia Deli - Edodimopolio [sic]. I am looking forward to more adventures!
