Seascapes and Souvlaki
Today in Monemvasia was a perfect blend of relaxation, exploration, and culinary indulgence. It's amazing how this small, historic town continues to surprise me with its hidden gems and authentic Greek experiences. I'm so glad I get to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Our day started with a delightful breakfast at Matoula Restaurant. This place is steeped in history, having been around since 1950. The restaurant is nestled on the main alleyway of the castle, and we sat in their beautiful garden under the shade of an arbor. The view of the sea was breathtaking, and the warm hospitality made us feel right at home. I decided to try their traditional *saitia* pie, a savory baked pie with greens, while Lena opted for the *Lachanodolmades*, cabbage leaves stuffed with rice, meat and lemon sauce. Kai, of course, went straight for the fresh bread. Fuelled up, we were ready for our day of exploration.

Our first stop was Coin baignade, a unique swimming spot right by the castle walls. The water was so clear and refreshing, perfect for a morning dip. It’s not a sandy beach, but rather a rocky platform, so comfortable shoes were essential. Kai, ever the adventurous one, was the first to jump in, followed by Lena and me. We spent a good hour swimming and soaking up the sun, enjoying the stunning views of the fortress from the sea.

After our swim, we decided to explore Πεζοπορία βράχου Μονεμβασιάς, a walking trail along the rocks. The path offered incredible views of the coastline and the surrounding area. As we walked, we noticed several small, secluded spots where people were sunbathing and swimming. It was tempting to stop at each one, but we were determined to complete the trail. The September sun was warm, but a gentle breeze kept us comfortable. I couldn't help but think of my home back in Hilo, Hawaii, and the similar connection to the ocean that I feel here. It’s funny how different places can evoke similar feelings of peace and belonging.

The beauty of Monemvasia lies not only in its historical architecture but also in the simple pleasures of enjoying its natural surroundings and local flavors.
By lunchtime, we were ready for a bite. We headed to Pita Fresca, a local spot known for its delicious and freshly made pitas. I opted for a classic gyro pita, while Lena chose a vegetarian option with grilled vegetables and feta. Kai, predictably, went for a pizza pita. The pitas were flavorful and satisfying, the perfect quick lunch to keep us going.

With our bellies full, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy. We stumbled upon Pietra Boutique Monemvasia, a charming shop offering a variety of clothing and accessories. Lena, always with an eye for fashion, found a beautiful silk scarf that she couldn't resist. Kai, surprisingly, was interested in a stylish leather bracelet. I ended up buying a traditional Greek fisherman's hat as a souvenir. It’s always fun to find unique items that remind us of our travels.

Our next stop was Monemvasia Deli - Edodimopolio, a local delicatessen that specializes in traditional products of the region. This place was a treasure trove of local flavors. We sampled a variety of olive oils, cheeses, and wines. The owners, Fotini and Paraskevas, were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, sharing stories about their products and the local culture. We ended up buying a bottle of *Melitókraso*, a traditional liqueur made from honey and water, known since ancient times. We also picked up some local almond sweets and a jar of homemade fig preserves. I'm looking forward to trying them back in Berlin.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Voltes for dinner. This family-owned restaurant is known for its traditional Greek dishes with a modern twist. The brothers who run the place source local, fresh ingredients and even produce their own wine. We started with a selection of *mezes*, including *dakos* (barley rusk with grated tomato and feta) and *saganaki* (fried cheese). For our main courses, I chose the sautéed porgy fillet with panzanella salad, Lena had the shrimp saganaki, and Kai devoured traditional fried meatballs. The food was exceptional, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the town, enjoying the quiet beauty of Monemvasia at night. The stars were out, and the air was filled with the scent of jasmine. We stopped for a gelato at a local shop and sat by the sea, watching the waves crash against the rocks. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
Tomorrow is our last day in Monemvasia, and we plan to make the most of it. Our itinerary includes a visit to Malvasia-Archantiko Stellaki, Paralia Monemvasias, and Moni Emvasis Luxury Suites. We’re also planning to have breakfast at mateo`s, lunch at Athivoli, and a farewell dinner at Emvasis Cafe - Cocktail Bar. And, if we have time, we might check out Di Porto, a local bar, for one last taste of Monemvasian nightlife. It’s bittersweet to think that our trip is coming to an end, but I’m grateful for the memories we’ve made and the experiences we’ve shared. Monemvasia has captured a piece of my heart, and I know I’ll be back someday.
