Island Life and Hidden Gems

Today was all about embracing the unique island life of Monemvassia Island. After three days of exploring the mainland, venturing around the island felt like stepping into a different world altogether. The blend of history, stunning landscapes, and local culture made for an unforgettable day, filled with discoveries and delightful surprises.

We started our day with breakfast at Pita Fresca. Lena had read about their unique pies, and we were eager to try them. The aroma of freshly baked dough wafted through the air as we approached, and the variety of fillings was impressive. I opted for a traditional pie with local cheese, while Kai went for a pizza. Lena, ever the adventurous one, chose a wrap with marinated octopus. Each bite was a burst of flavor, a testament to the passion and creativity of the team behind Pita Fresca. It's amazing how they've elevated street food to a gourmet experience.

With our bellies full, we set out to explore Monemvassia Island. The island itself is a marvel, a massive rock formation jutting out of the sea, connected to the mainland by a short causeway. As we walked through the narrow, winding streets of the medieval fortress town, I couldn't help but feel transported back in time. The stone houses, the Byzantine churches, and the remnants of the castle walls whispered stories of centuries past.

The beauty of Monemvasia lies not just in its stunning views, but in the way it seamlessly blends history, culture, and natural beauty into a single, unforgettable experience.

Our first stop was Pēgés, a charming area known for its natural springs and lush greenery. It was a refreshing contrast to the stark stone landscape of the fortress town. We took a leisurely stroll, enjoying the tranquility and the sound of the water trickling through the springs. Kai, always the curious one, was fascinated by the local flora and fauna, while Lena took some stunning photographs of the landscape.

Next on our list was Portello Beach. This hidden gem is located right behind the mighty walls of Monemvasia, offering a unique swimming experience. Imagine swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the Myrtle Sea, with the shadow of an ancient castle looming overhead. It's an experience unlike any other. The water was invigorating, and the views were simply breathtaking. Even though it's September, the sun was warm, and the sea was inviting. We spent a couple of hours swimming and sunbathing, soaking up the Mediterranean vibes.

After our swim, we decided to explore the local shops. Lena was particularly interested in finding some unique jewelry, so we headed to Kornilia Jewellery Shop. The shop is located in the heart of the Kastro, and it's a treasure trove of handcrafted pieces. From delicate necklaces to stunning rings, each piece reflects the artistry and craftsmanship of Greek jewelry. The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, sharing the stories behind each piece. Lena eventually found a beautiful silver pendant with a traditional Greek design, a perfect memento of our trip. I even found a small tribal tattoo design that was similar to the one I have on my arm, which was a nice reminder of home.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to The Athas for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Greek cuisine and its stunning views of the Aegean Sea. We started with a selection of mezes, including tzatziki, dolmades, and saganaki. For our main courses, I opted for the grilled lamb, while Lena chose the fresh seafood. Kai, of course, went for the souvlaki. The food was delicious, the service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was magical. As we savored our meal, we watched the sun set over the sea, painting the sky with hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

One thing I've really appreciated about this trip is how much we're learning about Greek culture and history. Lena, with her museum curator background, is in her element, constantly sharing insights and historical context. It's enriching the experience for all of us, and it's something I'm grateful for.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the history of Monemvasia by visiting the WWII Shipwreck, the Poet Yiannis Ritsos Commemorative Plaque, and the Wall Cistern. I'm particularly interested in the Commemorative Plaque. It's always moving to connect with the artistic soul of a place. We'll also be exploring more local shops, including Olive Wood, and trying out new restaurants like Mateo's, Peinakothḗkē, and Matoula Restaurant. I'm looking forward to another day of discovery and adventure in this captivating corner of Greece.

As I reflect on today, I'm struck by how much Monemvasia has to offer. It's not just a pretty place; it's a place with a soul, a place with a story to tell. And I'm grateful to be here, experiencing it with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I am also grateful that the cruise ship *Wind Surf* did not arrive until 10:00 AM, and depart until 7:00 PM. The cruise ships bring a lot of tourists to the area, but it can also make the area crowded. We had the morning to ourselves, and then the evening to ourselves, which was really nice.

The Laconian Products Festival was held a few days ago, but it sounds like it was a great event. Maybe we'll be able to attend next year.

I'm also thinking about the Easter celebrations in Monemvasia. It sounds like an unforgettable experience, with the chanting of the Easter hymns echoing around the cliff faces, and the faithful joining in the procession holding white candles. Maybe we'll have to come back for Easter someday.
