Day 3: A Day of Tranquility and Taste in Taroudant
Discover the serene beauty of Dar Zahia, lush gardens, and delightful Moroccan cuisine in Taroudant, a day filled with cultural immersion.
Oasis of Calm and Culinary Delights
Today was a gentle immersion into the heart of Taroudant, a city that whispers stories of ancient dynasties and vibrant Berber culture. It was a day of discovering hidden gems, savoring local flavors, and letting the tranquil atmosphere seep into our souls. Liam, Maya, and I set out with open hearts, ready to embrace whatever adventures the day held.
Our morning began with the promise of a traditional Moroccan breakfast at Café & Hotel Saha Taroudant. The aroma of freshly baked bread and mint tea wafted through the air as we stepped inside. The café was a cozy haven, decorated with intricate tile work and warm, inviting colors. We settled into a comfortable corner, eager to sample the local fare. Maya, ever the adventurous one, insisted on trying everything, from the sweet pastries to the savory olives. Liam and I enjoyed the strong, sweet coffee, a perfect start to our day. The staff was incredibly welcoming, making us feel like cherished guests rather than just tourists. It was a delightful experience, a true taste of Moroccan hospitality.
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we ventured towards DarZahia, a riad nestled within the ancient walls of the city. Finding it was an adventure in itself, winding through narrow alleyways that seemed to breathe with history. When we finally arrived, we were greeted by a serene oasis, a world away from the bustling streets outside. The riad was stunning, with lush gardens, tranquil courtyards, and rooms that exuded elegance and calm.

The beauty of Dar Zahia lies not just in its stunning architecture and serene gardens, but in its ability to transport you to a world of tranquility and peace.
We spent a leisurely morning exploring every nook and cranny of Dar Zahia. Maya was particularly enchanted by the rooftop terrace, where a riot of colorful flowers bloomed in the warm September sun. She ran around, her laughter echoing through the air, as Liam and I soaked in the panoramic views of Taroudant. The riad was a true hidden gem, a testament to the beauty and artistry of Moroccan design.
Leaving Dar Zahia, we decided to lose ourselves in Taroudant's Gardens, a sprawling green space that offered a respite from the city's hustle and bustle. As we strolled through the gardens, I couldn't help but reflect on the history of Taroudant itself. Once a vital stop on the trans-Saharan trade routes, connecting sub-Saharan Africa with the Mediterranean, Taroudant has been a melting pot of cultures and influences for centuries. The Saadian dynasty, who once ruled Morocco from this very city, left an indelible mark, fortifying it with the iconic ramparts that still stand today.

The gardens themselves were a testament to the blend of Berber and Persian influences, with lush vegetation, intricate water features, and quiet corners for contemplation. Maya was fascinated by the exotic plants, asking endless questions about their origins and uses. Liam, ever the nature enthusiast, pointed out various birds and insects, sharing his knowledge with us. It was a perfect family moment, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the echoes of history.
Lunchtime found us at Café et Restaurant Attadamoune, a local favorite known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. We ordered a variety of dishes, from tagines to couscous, eager to sample the flavors of the region. The food was delicious, each dish bursting with spices and aromas that tantalized our taste buds. Maya, surprisingly, devoured a lamb tagine, declaring it her favorite Moroccan dish so far. Liam and I savored the couscous, a fluffy and flavorful delight that perfectly complemented the tagine. The meal was a true culinary adventure, a testament to the rich and diverse flavors of Moroccan cuisine.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to seek out Le Moulin de Taroudant for a refreshing drink. This unique establishment, a blend of hotel, restaurant, and bar, exuded a relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere. We settled into comfortable chairs by the pool, ordering mint tea and fresh juice. The gardens were meticulously manicured, creating a tranquil oasis in the heart of the city. Maya splashed in the pool, while Liam and I enjoyed the cool drinks and the peaceful ambiance. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

For dinner, we opted for Chouwaya Tinzert, a restaurant renowned for its grilled meats and traditional Moroccan dishes. The aroma of grilling meat filled the air as we approached, making our mouths water in anticipation. We chose a selection of skewers, from chicken to lamb, and watched as they were expertly grilled over an open flame. The meat was tender and flavorful, perfectly seasoned with local spices. We also ordered a side of couscous and a traditional Moroccan salad, completing our culinary feast. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, filled with laughter and chatter. It was a fitting end to a day of culinary exploration.

As we strolled back to our guesthouse, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had shared today. Taroudant had charmed us with its beauty, its history, and its warm hospitality. It was a day of simple pleasures, of savoring local flavors and discovering hidden gems. It was a day that reminded me of the importance of slowing down, of connecting with the culture around us, and of cherishing the moments we share with our loved ones.
Tomorrow, we're planning a trip to the Oasis Tiout, and I'm particularly excited to see the Maison d'hôtes oasis de tiout [If I remember to pack my sunglasses that is...]. We'll also be stopping by the Cooperative Amagor Argan to learn more about the production of argan oil, a staple of Moroccan beauty and cuisine. Another day of discovery awaits!
This trip to Taroudant is coinciding with the 11th edition of the National Griha and Malhoun Art Festival. While we didn't specifically attend any of the festival events today, it's wonderful to know that we're here during a time when the city is celebrating its rich artistic heritage. Perhaps we'll catch a performance in the coming days!
For those planning a trip to Morocco in September, Taroudant offers a unique and authentic experience, far from the bustling tourist hubs. Whether you're interested in history, culture, or simply relaxing in a beautiful setting, Taroudant has something to offer everyone. And who knows, maybe you'll stumble upon your own hidden gems along the way.
