Tiout's Timeless Beauty
Today was a day of escaping the ordinary and diving headfirst into the heart of Morocco’s captivating landscapes. We ventured to the Oasis Tiout, a place where time seems to slow down, and the beauty of nature and culture intertwine seamlessly. It was an experience that resonated with all of us, offering a blend of adventure, relaxation, and a deeper connection to the Moroccan way of life.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Snack El Piacere in Taroudant. The warm, inviting atmosphere and the delicious Moroccan cuisine set the perfect tone for our adventure. I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan pancake, while Liam devoured a tagine. Maya, ever the pizza enthusiast, opted for a small cheese pizza. It was a hearty and satisfying start to what promised to be a memorable day.
After breakfast, we hopped in our private transfer and headed towards Oasis Tiout. The drive itself was an experience, with the landscape transforming from the bustling streets of Taroudant to the serene countryside. We passed fields of olive groves and argan trees. The September sun was warm, but a gentle breeze kept the temperature comfortable. I was glad I had packed sunscreen, even though I forgot my sunglasses back in Kelowna.
Arriving at Oasis Tiout felt like stepping into another world. The lush palm groves, fed by ancient underground springs, created a vibrant contrast to the arid surroundings. The air was filled with the sweet scent of dates and the sound of birds chirping. We checked into Maison d'hôtes oasis de tiout, our charming guesthouse for the night.

The beauty of a place lies not just in what you see, but in how it makes you feel.
Our accommodation was simple but comfortable, with traditional Moroccan décor and a stunning view of the oasis. After settling in, we decided to explore the area. Ahmed, the guesthouse owner, offered to take us on a guided tour of the oasis. He was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing stories about the history, culture, and ecology of the region.
We strolled through the palm groves, marveling at the ingenuity of the ancient irrigation systems. Ahmed explained how the local community has sustainably managed the oasis for centuries, ensuring its survival for future generations. Maya was fascinated by the donkeys that roamed freely, offering rides to visitors. Liam, ever the adventurous one, decided to hop on for a short trek, with Maya giggling along.
Next, we visited the Kasbah of Tiout, an ancient fortress perched atop a hill overlooking the oasis. The views from the top were breathtaking, with panoramic vistas of the palm groves, the surrounding mountains, and the distant desert. Ahmed shared tales of sultans and warriors who once ruled from this strategic location. I could almost imagine what life was like centuries ago, as we wandered through the Kasbah's crumbling walls and hidden courtyards. The Kasbah is also known for being a filming location for the 1954 film “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.”
For lunch, we dined at Restaurant Kasbah Tiout, located within the Kasbah walls. The restaurant served traditional Moroccan cuisine, with a focus on local ingredients. We savored a delicious tagine with chicken and vegetables, accompanied by freshly baked bread and mint tea. The flavors were rich and authentic, a true taste of Morocco.

After lunch, we visited the Cooperative Amagor Argan, a local cooperative dedicated to producing argan oil. We learned about the traditional methods of extracting the oil from the argan nuts, a process that has been passed down through generations of Berber women. I purchased a small bottle of argan oil, hoping it will help with my perpetually dry skin. It was fascinating to see how the cooperative empowers women in the community, providing them with economic opportunities and preserving their cultural heritage.

In the late afternoon, as the sun began to set, we returned to our guesthouse. The sky was ablaze with color, painting the oasis in hues of orange, pink, and purple. We relaxed on the terrace, sipping mint tea and reflecting on the day’s adventures. Maya played with some local children, communicating through gestures and laughter.
For dinner, we decided to try Snack Paradise, a local eatery known for its authentic Moroccan snacks. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and festive atmosphere. I ordered a plate of harira soup, a traditional Moroccan lentil soup, while Liam opted for a kebab. Maya, of course, chose a pastry. The food was simple but delicious, a perfect end to a perfect day.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can still feel the warmth of the sun on my skin and the taste of mint tea on my tongue. Oasis Tiout is a place that stays with you long after you leave, a reminder of the beauty and simplicity of life. Tomorrow, we head back to Taroudant, planning to visit Palais Claudio Bravo and Dar al Hossoun. I am excited to see what new adventures await us. For now, I will drift off to sleep, dreaming of palm trees and desert sunsets.
