A Day of Wheels and Deals in Taroudant

Today was all about immersing ourselves even deeper into the heart of Taroudant. We traded our usual walking shoes for a more adventurous mode of transport and dove headfirst into the vibrant local scene. It's amazing how quickly this city is starting to feel like home, even if it’s just for a little while.

Our day began, as most do, with a hearty breakfast. We headed to Snack Itrane, a local spot recommended by our guesthouse owner. The aroma of freshly baked bread and brewing mint tea filled the air as we stepped inside. I ordered some traditional Moroccan pancakes called 'beghrir,' while Liam opted for a classic omelet. Maya, of course, went straight for the pastries. Fuelled up, we were ready to tackle the day's adventures.

First on our list was a bike tour with Thami Bike Tours. I had booked it a few days prior, eager to explore the city beyond its main squares. Thami, our guide, was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Taroudant. He met us near our riad, and after a quick bike fitting, we were off.

The bike tour was fantastic ! We started by cycling along the ancient city walls, which Thami explained date back to the 16th century. The ramparts are incredibly well-preserved, and biking alongside them gave us a unique perspective of the city's history. Maya loved waving to the locals as we passed, and they always waved back with warm smiles. Thami shared stories about the city's past, its role as a former capital, and the various dynasties that had shaped its identity.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.

We then ventured into the medina, navigating the narrow, winding streets with surprising ease. Thami expertly guided us through the bustling souks, pointing out hidden gems and local artisan workshops. We stopped at a leather workshop where we watched skilled craftsmen create intricate bags and wallets. The smell of leather was intense but fascinating.

Next, we cycled to 20 August Place, a central square that Thami explained is a hub of local life. It was bustling with activity – vendors selling everything from spices to carpets, families enjoying the sunshine, and locals sipping mint tea at the nearby cafes. Maya was particularly fascinated by a street performer playing traditional Moroccan music. We stopped for a few minutes to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy a refreshing glass of orange juice.

After the bike tour, we were famished. Thami recommended Snack Havana for lunch, praising their tagines and friendly service. We found a table outside and ordered a chicken tagine and some grilled skewers. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. Maya devoured her skewers, declaring them the best she'd ever had. Liam and I enjoyed the tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices.

In the afternoon, we decided to explore the souks further, this time on foot. We wandered through the maze of stalls, admiring the colorful textiles, intricate ceramics, and handcrafted jewelry. I was on the hunt for a unique Berber carpet, while Liam was interested in finding some local spices to bring back home to Kelowna.

We stumbled upon De Velasco Boutique, a small shop known for its high-quality Moroccan goods. The owner, a friendly woman named Fatima, greeted us warmly and showed us her collection of carpets, pottery, and clothing. I was immediately drawn to a beautiful handwoven carpet with intricate geometric patterns. After some friendly haggling, I managed to negotiate a good price and proudly purchased it. Liam found a selection of aromatic spices, including saffron, cumin, and ras el hanout. Fatima also gave Maya a small, hand-painted ceramic bowl as a gift, which Maya absolutely loved.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to our riad to freshen up before dinner. We had made a reservation at Riad Asma, a restaurant known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine and charming ambiance. The riad was beautifully decorated with intricate tilework and lush plants. We were seated in a cozy courtyard and enjoyed a delicious meal of couscous and grilled meats. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was magical.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the medina, enjoying the cool evening air and the sounds of the city. The streets were quieter now, but still full of life. We stopped for some pastries at a local bakery and savored them as we walked back to our riad.

Today was a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and relaxation. We explored the city on two wheels, immersed ourselves in the vibrant souks, and enjoyed delicious Moroccan cuisine. Taroudant continues to surprise and delight us with its charm and authenticity. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which include visiting Bab El Kasbah and Roudana Targanet. I hear Bab El Kasbah is the main gate and offers stunning views. Roudana Targanet, I've read, is another fascinating part of the city. And perhaps we'll find a cozy spot at Complexe El Kasbah for an evening drink.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Traveling with my family is always special, but exploring a new culture together is even more rewarding. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings and to continue sharing our journey with you all.

Until then, Shalom from Taroudant!
