A Day of Discovery in Taroudant

Today, our seventh day in Taroudant, was a delightful mix of historical exploration, cultural immersion, and relaxation. It’s amazing how much this city, often called the 'Grandmother of Marrakech,' has to offer. I was especially excited to delve deeper into its ancient walls and vibrant local life. Liam, Maya and I were ready for a day of adventure, eager to uncover more of Taroudant's secrets.

Our day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Snack Jad. This cozy spot, recommended by several locals, was the perfect place to fuel up for our explorations. The warm, inviting atmosphere and the friendly staff made us feel right at home. Maya especially loved the freshly baked bread, while Liam and I enjoyed a traditional tagine. It was the perfect start to a day filled with discovery.

Exploring Bab El Kasbah

Our first stop was Bab El Kasbah, one of the city's main gates. As we approached, the avenue of orange trees leading to the gate was a sight to behold. The triple-arched entrance, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, is truly impressive. We climbed the steps to the top of the tower and walked along the ramparts, taking in the panoramic views of Taroudant.

The history of this gate is palpable; you can almost feel the echoes of centuries past. It’s incredible to think about all the merchants, travelers, and soldiers who have passed through this very entrance. The architecture itself is a testament to the city's rich heritage, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe as I stood there, imagining what life must have been like centuries ago. Maya was fascinated by the towers and kept asking questions about the people who built them, sparking some interesting conversations about history and culture.

“Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.”

A Visit to Roudana Targanet

Next, we ventured to Roudana Targanet, a local establishment known for its bio argan oil products. As someone passionate about sustainable living, I was particularly interested in their commitment to ethical sourcing and quality. Roudana Targanet offers a variety of bio products, natural oils, spices, and herbs. We learned about the process of extracting argan oil from the argan tree, a tree that thrives in this dry environment.

The visit was both educational and enjoyable. We sampled different argan oils and learned about their various health and beauty benefits. Maya even got a small bottle of argan oil to use on her hair, which she was thrilled about. It’s wonderful to support local businesses that are dedicated to sustainability and preserving the region's natural resources. I appreciate that Roudana Targanet is not just a business but a brand deeply rooted in the community and committed to preserving the environment.

Lunch at Snack House

For lunch, we decided to try Snack House, a local spot recommended for its fast food. It turned out to be a great choice. The atmosphere was relaxed and the staff were friendly. Liam and Maya both ordered tacos, while I opted for a Moroccan chicken dish. The food was delicious and reasonably priced, making it a perfect family-friendly option.

I was particularly impressed with the variety of options available. From traditional Moroccan dishes to fast-food staples, there was something for everyone. The service was quick and efficient, which was great since Maya was starting to get a bit restless. It was a nice, casual meal that allowed us to recharge before continuing our explorations.

Evening Relaxation at Complexe El Kasbah

As the day drew to a close, we decided to unwind at Complexe El Kasbah, a local bar. The atmosphere was lively, and we enjoyed sipping on some refreshing drinks while soaking in the local ambiance. The setting was perfect for people-watching and enjoying the beautiful September evening.

I found the history of Complexe El Kasbah quite fascinating. It started in the 1930s as a residence and was transformed into a restaurant in 2018 by two friends, Said & Said. Their goal was to create a place where conviviality and local flavors come together. Today, it’s a popular spot in Taroudant, known for its traditional dishes, wood-fired pizzas, and stunning views of the Atlas Mountains.

We had dinner at Royal Snack. It was a cozy and trendy place serving halal dishes. Liam enjoyed a chicken dish, and Maya and I had tacos. The prices were reasonable, and the service was great.
