A Day of Exploration in Taroudant

Today was a day of delving deeper into the soul of Taroudant, a city that continues to surprise and enchant me with its authentic charm. It’s amazing how each day here unveils new layers of history, culture, and the simple joys of Moroccan life. Today, Liam and Maya joined me as we set out to explore a few more of Taroudant's treasures.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Snack Bistro Farah. It was a bustling little spot, filled with locals starting their day. I ordered some traditional Moroccan pancakes, and Liam opted for a tagine. Maya, of course, chose a croissant. The food was simple but delicious, and the atmosphere was vibrant and welcoming. It was a great way to fuel up for the day's adventures. I am always grateful for these moments where we connect with the local culture through its food.

After breakfast, our first stop was Le Moulin de Taroudant. This place is truly something special. As we approached, the architecture was stunning – an old mill that had been beautifully restored into a hotel, restaurant, and bar. The building exuded history, and I could almost hear the echoes of the past as we walked through its doors. The interior was just as impressive, with traditional Moroccan décor blending seamlessly with modern comforts. We wandered through the gardens, admiring the lush greenery and the tranquil atmosphere. It felt like stepping into another world, a peaceful oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We didn't stay for a meal, but I made a mental note to return for dinner one evening. It seemed like the perfect spot for a romantic night out with Liam. The kids would love the pool.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.

Next on our list was Dar Tourkia, a traditional guesthouse located in the heart of the old city. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a serene courtyard filled with plants and the soothing sound of a fountain. The architecture was stunning, with intricate tile work and beautifully carved wooden doors. We were given a tour of the property and learned about its history. It was once a family home and had been lovingly restored to welcome guests from around the world. The rooms were beautifully decorated, each with its own unique character. I could imagine spending a few nights here, soaking up the peaceful atmosphere and enjoying the hospitality of the owners. Maya was particularly fascinated by the courtyard and spent a good amount of time chasing butterflies among the flowers. I remember when I was her age back in Tiberias, I would chase butterflies in the fields near our home. It's a memory I cherish, and I'm glad Maya is creating similar memories here in Morocco.

For lunch, we decided to try Chouwaya Ait Tament, a local spot known for its grilled meats. It was a simple, no-frills establishment, but the food was outstanding. Liam and I shared a mixed grill platter, while Maya opted for chicken skewers. The meats were perfectly cooked and seasoned, and the portions were generous. It was exactly what we needed after a morning of exploring. The owner was incredibly friendly and made us feel right at home. He even gave Maya a small toy as we were leaving, which she was thrilled about. It’s these small gestures of kindness that make traveling so rewarding.

In the afternoon, we ventured into Roudana Targanet, a local shop specializing in traditional Moroccan crafts. The shop was a treasure trove of beautiful items, from intricately woven carpets to hand-painted ceramics and ornate metalwork. I was immediately drawn to a stunning ceramic tagine pot, which I knew would be perfect for recreating some of the delicious dishes we'd been enjoying here in Morocco back home in Kelowna. Liam, ever the practical one, admired the quality of the leather goods, while Maya was fascinated by the colorful displays of jewelry. We spent a good hour browsing the shop, chatting with the owner, and learning about the different crafts. I ended up purchasing the tagine pot, as well as a small leather pouch for Liam and a beaded bracelet for Maya. It felt good to support the local artisans and bring home a little piece of Morocco with us. I always try to buy local when we travel; it's a way of giving back to the community and ensuring that these traditional crafts continue to thrive. I also picked up a beautiful rug.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Hotel Restaurant Souss for dinner. This restaurant had been recommended to us by several locals, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was elegant and refined, with soft lighting and comfortable seating. The menu featured a mix of Moroccan and international dishes, and everything sounded delicious. Liam started with a traditional harira soup, while I opted for a salad with local greens and goat cheese. For our main courses, Liam chose a lamb tagine, and I went with a seafood paella. Maya, of course, ordered pasta. The food was exquisite, each dish bursting with flavor and beautifully presented. The service was impeccable, and the staff made us feel like royalty. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Taroudant. We savored every bite, reminiscing about our adventures and making plans for the days to come. I am so glad we decided to try this place, it was amazing to try the local cuisine.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible city with my family. Taroudant has a way of capturing your heart and leaving you wanting more. The people are warm and welcoming, the culture is rich and vibrant, and the food is simply divine. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, as we plan to visit Dar El Baroud and Magazin De Poterie. And perhaps we'll enjoy a relaxing evening at Café-Restaurant Bab El Kasbah.

I'm also reminded of how fortunate I am to be able to share these experiences with Liam and Maya. Travel has a way of bringing us closer together, creating memories that will last a lifetime. As Maya gets older, I hope she'll remember these trips and the lessons she's learned along the way. I want her to grow up with an open mind, a curious spirit, and a deep appreciation for the world around her. And maybe, just maybe, she'll develop a passion for travel blogging too! I think she would be great at it.
