Echoes of the Past and Artistic Treasures

Today in Taroudant felt like stepping back in time, interwoven with the vibrant artistry that defines this region. The day was a blend of historical exploration and cultural immersion, perfect for experiencing with my family. It's days like these that make our family trips so memorable, as we discover new facets of a place together.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Crèmerie Al Firdaouss. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sweet scent of Moroccan pastries filled the air. Maya was particularly excited about the croissants, and Liam enjoyed a traditional Moroccan breakfast with olives and bread. I savored a strong coffee, preparing myself for the day's adventures. It was a simple yet perfect start, fueling us for the explorations ahead.

Our first destination was Dar El Baroud, also known as the house of gunpowder. This late 19th-century palace is built on the remains of a Saadian storehouse. As its name suggests, it was once used by the Saadians to store weapons. Although the edifice is not always open to the public, we were fortunate enough to be able to explore the grounds. Walking through the gardens, I could almost hear the echoes of the past. The architecture was striking, and the serene atmosphere provided a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Taroudant. It’s fascinating to imagine the history contained within those walls, especially considering Taroudant’s role as a former capital of Morocco.

Exploring Dar El Baroud offered a glimpse into Taroudant's rich history. The palace, though not always accessible, stands as a testament to the city's past glory. The structure itself showcases traditional Moroccan craftsmanship, with beautiful tile work and carvings. The quiet ambiance allowed for reflection, a peaceful contrast to the lively streets of Taroudant. As we walked through the gardens, Maya was fascinated by the intricate designs and kept asking questions about who lived there and what their lives were like. It was a great opportunity to share some of the history I had learned about the Saadian dynasty and their influence on the region.

“The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing their history and culture firsthand.”

Next on our itinerary was Magazin De Poterie, a pottery store renowned for its vibrant collection of handcrafted pieces. As we stepped inside, we were immediately captivated by the colorful array of pottery. From intricately painted plates to beautifully crafted vases, each piece told a story of Moroccan culture. Maya was particularly drawn to a set of small, brightly colored bowls, and we ended up buying them as souvenirs. It was fascinating to learn about the techniques and traditions passed down through generations of artisans.

The store itself was a treasure trove of Moroccan craftsmanship. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable, sharing insights into the pottery-making process and demonstrating the skill and dedication required to create these stunning works of art. I found myself drawn to a large, intricately designed tagine pot, imagining the delicious meals I could prepare in it back home in Kelowna. Liam, ever practical, admired the craftsmanship and durability of the pieces. The experience was not just about shopping; it was about experiencing the heart of Moroccan artistry and taking home a piece of its vibrant heritage.

For lunch, we stopped at Crèmerie Assada, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Moroccan dishes. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the decor combined rustic elements with Moroccan artistry. We ordered a variety of tagines, each bursting with flavor and spices. Maya, surprisingly, enjoyed the chicken tagine with olives and preserved lemons. Liam and I savored the lamb tagine with apricots and almonds. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, ensuring that each dish was not only delicious but also reflective of Taroudant's agricultural bounty.

After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll through the streets of Taroudant, soaking in the local atmosphere. The city, often referred to as 'little Marrakech', is filled with rich history and culture. We explored the bustling souks, where vendors sold everything from spices and textiles to jewelry and leather goods. I couldn't resist buying a beautiful Berber rug, its intricate patterns telling stories of the region's heritage. Liam bargained for a set of leather sandals, and Maya picked out a colorful scarf. It was a sensory overload, but in the best possible way.

As the afternoon waned, we found ourselves at Café-Restaurant Bab El Kasbah. We sat outside, enjoying the cool breeze and the lively ambiance of the square. Liam and I ordered mint tea, while Maya opted for a refreshing orange juice. The café is known for its relaxed atmosphere and is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. We watched as people strolled by, chatting and laughing, and I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

For dinner, we decided to try Snack Tchika, a local eatery known for its authentic Moroccan flavors. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and we were quickly seated at a cozy table. We ordered a selection of dishes, including grilled meats, salads, and traditional Moroccan soups. Maya loved the brochettes, and Liam and I enjoyed the flavorful tagines. The meal was a culinary delight, a perfect end to a day of gastronomic adventures.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our experiences. Taroudant had truly captured our hearts with its rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. I feel so grateful that I get to share these experiences with my family. Each day brings us closer together, creating memories that will last a lifetime. As we walked back to our guesthouse, hand in hand, I couldn't help but smile. This family adventure in Taroudant is turning out to be everything I had hoped for and more. Maybe even a bit like my childhood trips in Tiberias.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Grande marché de l'artisanat and Tighonatine [crafts market] to further immerse ourselves in the local culture. We’ll start the day with breakfast at Pizzeria Gourmandise, followed by lunch at Snack El Benna and dinner at Snack Havana. I am also hoping to find some time to visit Librairie Elmanahil [book store]. I'm already looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery in this enchanting city.
