Family Adventure on Shikoku Island: A Cultural Journey in Japan
Day 5: Art, Views, and Twilight Hues: A Day of Discovery in Shikoku
Explore Shikoku's art scene at the Otsuka Museum, witness stunning views from Kurushima Strait, and unwind with local flavors.
A Day of Artistic Wonders and Scenic Heights
Today was a delightful blend of art, breathtaking scenery, and culinary exploration here on Shikoku Island. It’s amazing how a single day can offer such a rich tapestry of experiences, from immersing ourselves in world-renowned art to gazing out at stunning natural vistas. It felt like we packed a week's worth of adventure into just a few hours, and every moment was worth savoring.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Dining Room Hibari. While the name 'Hibari' might suggest a connection to the cozy chalet we enjoyed in Niseko last year , this was a completely different experience, a local spot buzzing with early morning energy. After fuelling up, we set off for the Otsuka Museum of Art.

Otsuka Museum of Art: A Journey Through Time
The Otsuka Museum of Art is truly something to behold. Imagine stepping into a space where you can see faithful, full-scale ceramic reproductions of masterpieces from around the world. From ancient murals to Renaissance paintings, it was like walking through the history of Western art.

The museum boasts over 1,000 works recreated on ceramic boards, using a technology developed by the Otsuka Group. These aren't just mere copies; they're designed to last for approximately 2,000 years, resistant to water and fire. It's a revolutionary approach to art preservation, ensuring these treasures can be appreciated for generations to come.
Maya was particularly fascinated by the Sistine Chapel recreation, craning her neck to take in every detail of Michelangelo's masterpiece. Liam and I were equally impressed by the sheer scale and ambition of the museum. Replicas of the Lascaux cave paintings transported us back to prehistoric times, while the vibrant colors of Van Gogh's sunflowers seemed to radiate warmth.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
The museum is vast; it bills itself as the largest exhibition space in Japan. We spent hours wandering through its halls, and I still feel like we only scratched the surface. It's a testament to human creativity and a reminder of the power of art to transcend time and culture.
Kurushima Strait Observatory: A Breathtaking Panorama
After our artistic immersion, we drove to the Kurushima Strait Observatory. The drive itself was lovely, winding through picturesque coastal roads. As we approached the observatory, the view opened up, revealing the stunning Kurushima Strait and its iconic bridge.

The Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge is the world's first triple suspension bridge, and it's an awe-inspiring sight. From the observatory, we had a 360-degree view of the bridge, the turbulent waters of the Seto Inland Sea, and the surrounding islands. We even spotted some local birdlife, including red kites and herons, soaring through the sky. The strong currents of the Kurushima Strait are one of the three major tides in Japan.
Maya was captivated by the ships passing beneath the bridge, imagining them sailing to distant lands. Liam, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the bridge's construction and design. I simply soaked in the beauty of the scene, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such natural and man-made wonders.
A Taste of Kochi: From Lunch to Late-Night Drinks
For lunch, we stopped at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop , a family restaurant that offered a comforting and familiar meal. It was a welcome break after our busy morning, a chance to recharge before the next adventure. It wasn't fancy, but it was satisfying and perfect for a quick bite.

As the day drew to a close, we ventured out for dinner at Munagin , a local restaurant known for its delicious cuisine. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was a delightful introduction to the flavors of Kochi. I tried a local specialty, which was absolutely divine.

To cap off the evening, Liam and I decided to check out tone dining bar. It was a stylish spot with a great selection of drinks and a lively atmosphere. We enjoyed some expertly crafted cocktails and chatted with some locals, learning more about the area and its culture. The bar had a romantic and natural aesthetic, decorated with dried flowers. I sampled one of their original cocktails, a fruity concoction that was both refreshing and delicious. Liam opted for a local sake, eager to experience the region's traditional flavors.

Reflections on the Day
Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. The chance to experience new cultures, see incredible sights, and taste delicious food is truly enriching. Shikoku Island continues to surprise and delight us, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings.
Tomorrow, we're heading to Kochi Castle, a historic landmark that promises stunning views of the city. We're also planning a visit to the Kami City Takashi Yanase Memorial Hall & Anpanman Museum, which I know Maya will absolutely adore. It’s a place dedicated to Takashi Yanase, the creator of Anpanman, a beloved children's character. I'm sure it will be a fun and whimsical experience for the whole family.
Before heading back to our guesthouse, I took a moment to reflect on the day. The memory of Maya's awestruck face in the Sistine Chapel replica, the panoramic view from Kurushima Strait, and the taste of that delicious local meal all swirled together in my mind. These are the moments that make travel so special, the moments that stay with you long after you've returned home.
As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Shikoku Island has captured my heart with its beauty, culture, and warmth. I can't wait to see what other treasures it holds.
