Chasing Waterfalls and Fern-Lined Caves

Today was a day of embracing the unexpected, a journey into the heart of Shikoku's natural beauty that left me utterly enchanted. It's days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the magic of stumbling upon hidden corners of the world, the kind you won't find on typical tourist trails. Today was all about nature's artistry, local flavors, and a touch of Irish hospitality.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Hakkenden Nankoku Osone. It was a cozy spot, filled with locals, and the perfect way to fuel up for our adventures. Maya was particularly excited about the Tamagoyaki, a rolled omelet that she declared was ‘fluffier than a cloud.’ Liam and I enjoyed some perfectly brewed green tea, a simple pleasure that always sets the tone for a great day. I was reminded of a manga series with a similar name, Hakkenden, and Maya was very interested in the story after learning that!

With our bellies full, we set off to explore the Ioki Cave. The drive itself was beautiful, winding through lush countryside, with rice paddies stretching out like emerald carpets. As we approached the cave, the air grew cooler, and the anticipation mounted. Ioki Cave is not just any cave; it’s a natural tunnel carved by ocean waves millions of years ago, a relic from a time when the sea embraced this very land.

The entrance was unassuming, almost hidden, just a few steps from the main road. As we stepped inside, it felt like entering another world. The cave was dimly lit, with water trickling down the walls, creating a mystical atmosphere. The walls themselves were embedded with fossilized shells, a testament to the cave’s underwater origins. Maya was fascinated, pointing out the different shapes and sizes of the shells. It was a wonderful, impromptu history lesson.

The path through the cave was easy enough to navigate, and before we knew it, we emerged into a canyon, a hidden oasis teeming with life. Towering walls of rock were covered in a vibrant tapestry of ferns – over 40 different species, I later learned. The sheer variety was astounding, a lush, green paradise that has earned the area recognition as a National Natural Monument. The air was thick with moisture, and the only sound was the gentle rush of water.

We followed a small stream that meandered through the canyon, leading us to three hidden waterfalls. Each one was a gem, cascading into pools of the most mesmerizing emerald hue. The largest waterfall at the end of the route was a sight to behold, a perfect reward for our little trek. I was glad we had worn our hiking boots, as the path was a bit damp in places, but it was nothing we couldn't handle.

Nature's wonders are not just sights to see, but experiences to immerse in, connecting us to the earth's ancient story.

After our enchanting cave experience, we were ready for lunch. We drove to Ombelico, a charming Italian restaurant in the area. It was a delightful surprise to find such authentic Italian cuisine in the heart of Shikoku. The pasta was homemade, the sauces were rich and flavorful, and the pizza was cooked to perfection. Maya devoured her Margherita, while Liam and I savored a bottle of local wine. It was a perfect midday treat.

Our next stop was the Amegaeri Waterfall, and the drive there was just as captivating as the destination. The route took us through winding mountain roads, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The waterfall is located in the Sedogawa Valley, an area renowned for its stunning natural beauty. Even though fall foliage was still months away, the lush greenery of the valley was a sight to behold.

As we approached the waterfall, the sound of rushing water grew louder, and we knew we were in for something special. Amegaeri Waterfall is a majestic cascade, with water plunging down several tiers of rock. The name Amegaeri means ‘returning rain,’ and legend has it that the beauty of the waterfall is so captivating that even the rain turns back to admire it. I could certainly see why.

We spent a good hour simply admiring the waterfall, taking photos, and soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. Maya loved scrambling over the rocks near the base of the falls, her laughter echoing through the valley. It was a moment of pure joy, a memory I know we’ll cherish for years to come.

For dinner, we decided to try Kohanyu, a local restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine. We opted for a selection of local specialties, including fresh seafood and mountain vegetables. The flavors were delicate and refined, a testament to the region’s culinary heritage. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was warm and inviting.

To cap off the day, Liam and I ventured out to Irish Pub Amontillado. It might seem strange to find an Irish pub in rural Japan, but it was a welcome surprise. The pub had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, with friendly locals and a great selection of beers on tap. We enjoyed a couple of pints of Guinness, reminiscing about our day’s adventures. It was a fun way to unwind and experience a different side of Kochi’s nightlife.

As I sit here writing this, I can’t help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Shikoku Island continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. Tomorrow, we’re off to explore the Oko Castle Ruins and the Kochi Sunday Market, promising another day of history, culture, and local flavors. I can't wait to see what adventures await us!

I'm also reminded that I need to buy more sunscreen! I knew I was forgetting something when packing. Oh well, that can be tomorrow's adventure!
