Kochi's Charms Unveiled

Today was a delightful immersion into the heart of Kochi, blending historical exploration with the vibrant energy of local life. From ancient castle ruins to bustling markets and delicious food, Kochi revealed its unique character and left us with lasting memories.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant&Cafe Riina. Fuelled up with local delicacies, we set off to explore the Oko Castle Ruins.

The drive there was scenic, offering glimpses of the Kochi countryside waking up. As we approached the castle site, I couldn't help but reflect on the stories these ancient stones could tell. It’s fascinating to imagine the Chōsokabe clan, who once ruled this province, walking the same paths we were about to tread.

The Oko Castle Ruins are perched atop a 97-meter mountain, providing a strategic vantage point over the surrounding Kochi plain. Although only ruins remain today, with low stone walls, moats and earthworks, it wasn't hard to envision the castle's former glory. Maya was particularly excited, imagining knights and battles as she explored the remains of the baileys. Liam, ever the history enthusiast, read aloud from our guidebook, detailing the castle's significance during the Muromachi and Sengoku periods. The Kōchi Prefectural Museum of History is located on what was once the Third Enclosure, and it exhibits excavated artifacts from the castle. We spent a couple of hours wandering the grounds, soaking in the panoramic views and the palpable sense of history.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you never thought to ask.

Next on our itinerary was the famous Kochi Sunday Market.

Held every Sunday for over 300 years, this market stretches for about 1.3 kilometers along Otesuji Street, near Kochi Castle. As we approached, the air was thick with the sounds of vendors calling out their wares and the chatter of locals and tourists alike. The market was a feast for the senses, with stalls overflowing with fresh produce, local crafts, antiques, and street food.

Maya was immediately drawn to a stall selling colorful candies, while Liam and I were captivated by the array of local fruits and vegetables we had never seen before. We sampled some country-style sushi and potato tempura, both local gourmet items. I couldn't resist buying a beautiful piece of local pottery, a memento of our visit. The energy of the market was infectious, and we spent a happy couple of hours browsing the stalls and chatting with the friendly vendors.

For lunch, we ventured to Amekaze Shokudo.

A local eatery known for its authentic Kochi cuisine. We tried several local dishes. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly, helping us navigate the menu and recommending local specialties. Feeling adventurous, I tried some local sake, which was surprisingly smooth and complemented our meal perfectly.

After lunch, we decided to do some shopping at AEON MALL Kochi.

Maya was thrilled to find a new anime figurine, while Liam picked up some local snacks to take back home. I found a beautiful silk scarf, a perfect reminder of our time in Shikoku. The mall was bustling with activity, and it was fun to people-watch and soak in the local atmosphere.

As evening approached, we made our way to Tataki Kobo for dinner.

This restaurant specializes in *katsuo no tataki*, seared bonito, a local delicacy that Kochi is famous for. We watched in fascination as the chefs prepared the dish, searing the bonito over a straw fire, a traditional method that imparts a unique smoky flavor. The *tataki* was served with sliced garlic, ginger, and *ponzu* sauce, and it was absolutely divine. The smoky flavor of the fish, combined with the fresh, tangy *ponzu*, was a culinary experience I won't soon forget. We savored every bite, relishing the flavors of Kochi.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by how much Kochi has to offer. It's a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and culinary delights. The Oko Castle Ruins provided a glimpse into the region's past, while the Kochi Sunday Market offered a vibrant snapshot of local life. And the food, oh the food! From the delicious *katsuo no tataki* to the local sake, Kochi has truly tantalized our taste buds.

Tomorrow marks the final day of our Shikoku adventure. We plan to visit the Ryugado Museum and Dainichi Temple. I am eager to see what other treasures Shikoku has in store for us before we head back to Kelowna. I am already cherishing the memories we've made on this incredible journey with my family.

As I sit here writing, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful island and share my experiences with you all. Shikoku has captured my heart, and I know I will carry its spirit with me long after I leave.

The warmth of the people, the beauty of the landscapes, and the richness of the culture have made this trip truly unforgettable. Until tomorrow, *shalom* from Kochi!
