Discover more about Herat Citadel

The Herat Citadel, also called the Citadel of Alexander or Qala Ikhtyaruddin, is a magnificent fortress located in the center of Herat [6]. Its origins trace back to 330 BC when Alexander the Great arrived in the region [4, 6]. Over the centuries, the citadel has served as a crucial strategic point, witnessing the ebb and flow of empires [6].Initially constructed by Alexander the Great, it was later incorporated into the northern perimeter of a square walled city [6]. The citadel faced destruction at the hands of Genghis Khan in 1222 but was rebuilt by the Kart dynasty in 1245 [6]. In the late 14th century, Timur's son, Shah Rukh, significantly transformed the citadel, rebuilding its fortifications and erecting new structures [6, 8, 9]. This Timurid-era construction is largely what visitors see today [6].In subsequent centuries, the citadel became a focal point in the struggle for territorial control between the Persians, Uzbeks, and Afghans [6]. During the 'Great Game' in the 19th century, British forces recognized its strategic importance and assisted Afghans in defending Herat against a joint Russian-Persian assault in 1837 [6]. Despite its defensive role, the citadel gradually fell into disrepair, prompting a joint consolidation and preservation program with UNESCO in 1976 [6].The citadel complex extends over 250 meters in length and 70 meters in width, divided into two main walled enclosures [6]. Visitors enter through a modern western entrance, leading to a lower enclosure where archaeological excavations are ongoing [6, 9]. The main attraction is the massive curtain wall topped with battlements offering tremendous views over Herat [6, 9].
