Herat Citadel: A Timeless Sentinel

Towering over Herat's Old City, the Herat Citadel, or Qala Ikhtyaruddin, has been a silent observer of the city's fortunes for centuries [4]. The oldest structure in Herat, its origins are traced back to 330 BC when Alexander the Great arrived in Afghanistan [4, 7, 12]. He rebuilt the city, then known as Artacoana, and established a fort, which many believe to be the foundation of the current citadel [7, 14].Throughout its history, the citadel has served multiple roles: a seat of power, a military garrison, and even a prison [4]. Repeated destruction and reconstruction have shaped its architecture, with significant contributions from the Kart dynasty in 1245 and Shah Rukh in 1415, who rebuilt and embellished the walls after Timur's destruction [4, 7, 11]. The citadel's imposing structure features towering walls, strong towers, and large courtyards, reflecting the skills of Timurid architects [6, 10]. Baked bricks and stone were used in its construction, designed to withstand enemy attacks [10].Despite facing neglect and damage, including a near demolition in 1953, the Herat Citadel has been the focus of several restoration projects [4]. The most recent renovation, between 2006 and 2011, involved hundreds of Afghan craftsmen and funding from international organizations [12]. Today, visitors can explore the upper enclosure, the most heavily fortified section, and witness ongoing archaeological excavations in the main courtyard [4]. The citadel also houses the Herat National Museum, showcasing artifacts, traditional clothes, and photographs that illustrate the history of Herat and the surrounding region [6, 12].
