Discover more about Babur Garden

Bagh-e Babur, also known as Babur's Garden, is a significant historical site in Kabul, Afghanistan, dating back to the early 16th century [2, 3]. Founded by Babur, the first Mughal emperor, the garden served as a recreational space during his lifetime and was later chosen as his final resting place [2, 3, 6]. This makes it the oldest imperial tomb in Afghanistan and the westernmost Mughal garden [11].The garden is laid out in the classic charbagh (four-garden) pattern, featuring a series of rising terraces divided by a central watercourse [17, 21]. Over the centuries, the garden has been re-developed by various Afghan rulers and underwent restoration efforts, most recently by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture [2, 3]. Today, visitors can explore the beautifully landscaped gardens, which include a variety of trees and flowers, Babur's tomb, a small mosque, and the Queen's Palace [6, 17].Key features include the white marble mosque built by Shah Jahan in 1647 and the caravanserai, which is planned to open as a visitor center [17]. The garden also contains species of plants mentioned in Babur's memoirs, the Baburnama, such as walnut, cherry, quince, mulberry, and apricot trees [17]. The site is not only a place of historical importance but also a popular spot for locals and tourists to gather and spend time in nature [6, 20].
