Charso Square: Kandahar's Historical Crossroads

Charso Square, or Chahar Suq, is more than just a geographical point in Kandahar; it's a living testament to the city's enduring spirit and historical significance [15]. This square was designed with amazing regularity during the reign of Ahmad Shah Durrani, the founder of modern Afghanistan, in the 18th century [17, 18, 19]. Historically, Charso Square was covered with a lofty dome and served as a central point for public proclamations [19]. The four bazaars that converge here – Kabul Bazaar, Herat Bazaar, Shah Bazaar, and Shkarpor Bazaar – made it a bustling hub for trade and social interaction [18]. Even now, it remains a vital center of activity in the city [19]. While parts of the ancient bazaar have been damaged over the years due to civil war, efforts are underway to restore this ancient site [17].
