Herat Citadel: A Living Testament to Afghan History

The Citadel of Herat, or Arg-e Herat, is a formidable fort located in the heart of Herat, Afghanistan [7]. Its origins are traced back to 330 BC when Alexander the Great arrived in the region [7, 9]. Throughout its 2,300-year history, the citadel has been a crucial strategic point, serving as headquarters for numerous empires [7]. It has faced destruction and reconstruction multiple times, bearing witness to the rise and fall of dynasties [7, 9]. The current structure largely reflects the Timurid era, particularly the reign of Shah Rukh in 1415, who rebuilt it after Timur's destruction [5, 10]. The citadel's architecture showcases the skills of Timurid architects, featuring towering walls, strong towers, and large courtyards, constructed with baked bricks and stone [5]. The citadel was designed to provide a strong defense against enemy attacks [5]. Over the centuries, the citadel suffered neglect, leading to the collapse of several sections [10]. However, an extensive renovation program was launched in the 1970s and a complete renovation occurred between 2006 and 2011, funded by international organizations and Afghan craftsmen [7, 10].
