Discover more about Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area

Established in 1978 by President Jimmy Carter, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) preserves the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Chattahoochee River [5, 7, 15]. This 48-mile corridor spans from the Buford Dam to Atlanta, encompassing over 6,000 acres of land and providing a green oasis in the heart of a bustling metropolis [5, 14, 23]. The CRNRA is more than just a scenic river; it's a dynamic landscape offering a wide array of recreational activities. Hiking enthusiasts can explore over 66 miles of trails, from paved, beginner-friendly paths to more challenging terrain that winds through dense forests and along rocky cliffs [2, 3, 21]. Cyclists can enjoy dedicated trails within the Cochran Shoals and Palisades units [3, 6]. Water lovers can indulge in various activities such as kayaking, canoeing, tubing, and fishing [2, 3]. The Chattahoochee is stocked with trout and other game fish, making it a popular destination for anglers [3, 5, 8]. Several outfitters along the river offer rentals and guided excursions for those seeking aquatic adventures [3, 8]. The CRNRA also boasts a rich history, with remnants of 19th-century mills and other structures scattered throughout the park [3, 14]. The Vickery Creek Unit, for example, features the ruins of Ivy Mill, a wool mill that produced fabric for Confederate soldiers [7, 14]. The park played a role in the Civil War, with troops crossing the river at Cochran Shoals during the Atlanta Campaign [14]. Whether you're seeking a peaceful stroll along the river, an adrenaline-pumping kayak trip, or a glimpse into the past, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area offers something for everyone [3, 5].
