Discover more about Fendall Hall

Fendall Hall stands as one of Alabama's most remarkable examples of Italianate architecture, narrating the story of its distinguished residents and Eufaula's development as a significant shipping and trading hub [5, 8]. Completed in 1860 by Edward Young, a successful merchant and cotton broker, the house reflects his prosperity and Eufaula's importance in the cotton trade [3, 4, 8]. The home remained in the Young family for five generations, until 1972 when the Alabama Historical Commission purchased it [3, 5, 8]. Today, Fendall Hall is a meticulously restored house museum, showcasing the period between 1880 and 1916 [3, 5]. Visitors can admire the stunning interior, featuring elaborate wall and ceiling murals in the entrance hall, parlor, and dining room [5]. The house also boasts black-and-white Italian marble entry, eight carved Italian marble fireplace surrounds, Baccarat crystal chandeliers and Bohemian cut glass pocket doors [8]. Fendall Hall also tells the story of Captain S.H. Dent, Young's son-in-law, who served in the Confederate Army [7, 8]. Dent's Battery saw action in several major battles, and his story is interwoven with the history of the house [7]. The museum displays artifacts and decorations belonging to the family and the time period, offering a glimpse into their daily lives [3].
