Fort Mims State Historic Site

Fort Mims State Historic Site, located near Stockton, Alabama, marks the location of a significant and tragic event in early American history. On August 30, 1813, this site was the scene of the Fort Mims Massacre, a pivotal battle in the Creek War.In 1813, settlers, allied Creeks, and enslaved African Americans sought refuge within a hastily constructed stockade surrounding the home of Samuel Mims. Tensions between the Red Stick faction of the Creek Nation and the increasing number of American settlers led to escalating conflicts. The Red Sticks, seeking to preserve their traditional values and resist American encroachment, attacked Fort Mims. The fort, defended by local militia, was unprepared for the assault, resulting in a devastating defeat for its inhabitants.The attack on Fort Mims, where hundreds of men, women, and children were killed, sparked outrage among the American public and ignited military action against the Creek Nation. The ensuing Creek War culminated in the Creek Nation ceding over 21 million acres of land to the United States.Today, visitors can explore a reconstructed portion of the fort, including a blockhouse and stockade. Interpretive signs and historical markers recount the events of the massacre and the broader context of the Creek War. The site serves as a memorial to those who lost their lives and offers a place for reflection on the complexities of early American history and the conflicts between settlers and Native Americans. Fort Mims is open daily from daylight until dark.
