Discover more about Flagg Mountain Tower

Flagg Mountain Tower, nestled within Weogufka State Forest in Coosa County, Alabama, marks a significant point on the map and in history. Rising to 1,152 feet, it's recognized as the southernmost peak of the Appalachian Mountains exceeding 1,000 feet in elevation. The mountain's story is deeply connected to the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a Depression-era initiative that provided employment and contributed to America's recovery. In 1935, the CCC meticulously constructed the 50-foot stone lookout tower. This tower, a testament to their craftsmanship, features walls ranging from two to three feet in thickness, reinforced with a distinctive crisscross pattern of large timbers inlaid with stone. The tower served as a fire tower until 1989, staffed by the Alabama Forestry Commission. Although envisioned as the centerpiece of a new state park, the park never fully materialized, leaving Flagg Mountain a cherished secret for locals and hikers. Today, Flagg Mountain is experiencing a revival thanks to the dedication of the Alabama Hiking Trail Society and the Friends of Flagg volunteer group. The tower has been renovated, offering visitors the chance to climb to the top and enjoy stunning views of the Coosa and Tallapoosa River valleys, as well as the Talladega Mountain range. Flagg Mountain also holds significance as the southern terminus of the Pinhoti Trail, a 330-mile hiking trail that connects to the Appalachian Trail in north Georgia. Visitors can explore over seven miles of interconnected trails within Weogufka State Forest, including an ADA-accessible half-mile path. The Alabama Forestry Commission manages the 240-acre forest, making it accessible to the public for various recreational activities. Camping and cabin rentals are available, offering a chance to extend your stay and immerse yourself in the tranquility of this natural oasis.
