Discover more about Bragg-Mitchell Mansion

The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, located in the Oakleigh Garden District of Mobile, Alabama, stands as a testament to the city's rich history and antebellum grandeur. Built in 1855 for Judge John Bragg, the 13,000-square-foot mansion is a prime example of Greek Revival architecture, complete with towering columns and a bracketed cornice hinting at Italianate influences. Originally, the mansion served as a social hub for Judge Bragg, his wife, and their family during Mobile's vibrant social season, which stretched from Thanksgiving through Mardi Gras. The family also owned a cotton plantation outside of Montgomery. Throughout its history, the mansion has been owned by several prominent families, each leaving their mark on its legacy. The last private owners, the A.S. Mitchell family, played a crucial role in preserving the mansion's iconic status. In the late 1970s, the Mitchell family donated the mansion to the Explore Center with the intention of creating an interactive science museum. However, recognizing the historical significance of the building, the Explore Center instead built a separate museum and undertook extensive renovations to restore the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion to its former glory. Reopened in 1987 as a historic house museum and event center, the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion continues to inspire, educate, and facilitate historic and cultural preservation. Today, visitors can take guided tours of the mansion, exploring its double parlors, lavish dining room, and grounds adorned with live oaks and azaleas.
